Why would you care what atheists say (a small group with not much political power) yet not care what someone like the Pope, or Muslim leaders, say when they have huge political power?

What exactly annoys you about atheists that doesn't annoy you about the Pope?

    Some reasons...

Religion impacts on our lives and therefore needs to be examined/discussed.

That a significant amount of adults believe in a divinity is fascinating/humourus/baffling and as such generates comment.

    You are annoyed?

Religion influences laws, politics and society at every level and is actively used to discriminate against children and their parents at schools. Religion has taken ownership of minds, tells people how to think, promotes bigotry, facilitates massive paedophile networks, has scammed people out of billions of euro and accumulated unbelievable power and wealth by exploiting fear, the unknown, guilt and remorse.

Delighted that you don't care about any of the above, I think I'd need a full frontal lobotomy to achieve same.

Because there is so many aspects of life that religion affects. From finding schools, relatives leaning on people regarding weddings and christenings, religious bodies & religious people fighting aspects of equality legislation, etc, etc...

I guess the quick answer is if religion, or more accurately the religious, didn't try to crowbar itself into other peoples lives then there would be little reason to ever mention it.

The other point is that some people are just interested in what goes on in the world around them, papal visits and vatican announcements often fall into the category of current affairs and so attract discussion much as a visit from british queen does despite people not being particularly anti or pro british monarchy. This is a discussion site after all, it tends to draw discussion about everything and anything - this particular section is frequented by a lot of atheists, agnostics and secularists and so religion is going to be a recurring theme.

Some feel strongly about the topics and hate to see some of the things the pope and other religious figures come out with so want to express what they disagree with. Wouldn't say it's all of them, same with everything really when certain people feel particularly strongly about something they are going to express it.

Religious people discuss their religion with other religious people.

Atheists discuss their lack of religion with other atheists.

In all seriousness, religion is a fascinating topic in my opinion. It can make people do all sorts of things, and the tiniest misinterpretation of some old book can cause riots. Not only that, but in the past few years, the attitude towards religion and the church in Ireland especially has shifted dramatically in my opinion. Who better to discuss it with than people who also have no religious beliefs?

Religion annoys me in the same way that it annoys me to hear about a doctor who also claims to be into homeopathy.

That is, it's unfounded and unbased nonsense which is given legitimacy over and above other forms of equal nonsense by virtue of the calibre of those who propagate it.

We wouldn't spend much time talking about religion if politicians and world leaders didn't.

And by "get on with my life", you mean complain to atheist about them complaining about religion?

You shouldn't. Not if you don't want too. That's the beauty of atheism, you don't have to celebrate it or discuss it if you don't want to. If you don't want to come here and discuss other religions, then don't. Run. Be free. Get on with your life. And I don't mean this in a snarky way. I'm serious. Atheism holds no rules. We choose to discuss these things because we're interested in them. But it's not a requirement.

And what if getting on with your life includes not being able to find a school to get your kids into, or being unable to marry the partner you want? Or adopt? Perhaps you just haven't had religion encroach on you getting on with your life yet?

i merely asked what the obsession was all about.

Lol, that's like strolling into the football forum and feigning confusion at what all the obsession with football is all about.

i dont listen to them nor do i listen to what any religion has to say but i find athiests to be more vocal about non belief.

Are you actually going to read the replies or keep repeating yourself?

    Really?
How many atheist do you know ringing door bells to tell you about how atheism will save you, and how many poster campaigns do they run? How many newspapers do they circulate? How much time do they get on telly?

I find that especially in Ireland you need to actually go out and find the atheists, because otherwise you'll never notice there are any around at all....

well considering im in work and i get 4 or 5 replies i think im doing a good job replying to what i can,as for repeating myself i dont think i am the three bit you quoted are different questions which in fairness have not been answered.

shenshen,i have not met anyone at my door trying to "sell" religion and as for finding athiests sure 90% of my mates are.

Congrats, you must have hidden your house extremely well. I had to chase off Jehova's Witnesses twice already this year, and some crackpots who wanted to put up a picture of the virgin Mary in my living rooms, so that others could come round and pray before it.

You're lucky in the choice of your mates, too, it would seem. Apart from 2 real-life people, the only atheists I've met in Ireland so far were either non-Irish or online (and you never really know about online people, do you?)

Right now I suspect you may be trolling.

You asked a question, and rather than addressing any of the responces to that question you made a statement about "getting on with your life". You then repeated the question only using the word "obsession", and finally said you find atheists more vocal than theists, again, ignoring the reasons people gave you for being vocal.

Consider this a warning to engage in the discussion prompted by your OP.

Because relatively recently we found ourselves able to without provoking a visit from the Priest, arousing the suspician of the neighbours, having your kids teased at school or being denounced from the pulpit.
Think of it as the atheist version of suddenly being able to dress in pink and a boa whilst listening to Kylie in public.
Say it loud. Im Godless and im proud:D

(Oh yeah. If you want a job as a teacher I would keep quiet about the whole 'godless' thing)

You clearly have no interest in peoples answers and just want to vent and have a go Mick. You asked a question and people answered, so you got prissy and got your knickers in a twist.

If you were actually seeking an answer, I'd give you one but you're not.

We don't really care that you care about us caring about something you think we shouldn't care about and that some people care about and others don't really care that much about.

tallaghtmick will be avoiding angry atheists for a spell.

Unless they start calling to his door, of course.
