Yes, if it had an oil leak. The TDIs are not known for burning oil unless the turbo's gone. Was it pouring out black or dark blue smoke at any stage? My money's on an O ring blown or badly installed oil filter. Either way it's probably borked. Did you check the oil when you bought it and have a mechanic look the car over?

Thanks for reply. No smoke came out at all. When I bought car it was just passed nct so I never checked anything. Thought an oil light would come on if I need oil. The owner of garage say the engine is f*cked and if I pay for engine he will install it and not charge me labour even though I have a 3 month engine and gearbox warranty. What can I do ?

As has been said, 1.9tdi's are not known for losing oil unless the turbo has blown a seal. I'd wager that is what happened here. It happened to me and the oil level was fine a week before the engine blew. The turbo fluid bearing seal had blown and engine oil pressure had pumped the oil out through the seal. As a result the engine siezed.

Its easy to diagnose, I would get it inspected by an engineer/mechanic. The turbo and intercooler piping will be full of oil which will identify the turbo as being a faulty part and the cause of the engine failure. An engineers report will be required as proof of this.

Sounds like 'your engine lost oil because a part failed' rather than 'your engine failed because you didn't check the oil level'.

Get an engineer's report and go to the Small Court if you have to. I can''t see any judge agreeing that it's your fault because you didn't check the oil level every week.

For future reference check the oil every few weeks. Especially on a new car when you don't know if it likes a bit of oil. Often when the light comes on it's too late.

hi lads 2 questions please? does the 2005 model have a warning light for low oil and if the car was just out of an NCT test would the 4 wheel alignment be perfect or do they test that?

I don't know of any modern car that does not have a low oil pressure light. Don't wait for it to come on before checking the level though!

Have a look at the side-slip (I think?) figures on the NCT report. They are relevant to the alignment of the wheels, which can be within the acceptable limits without being 'perfect'.

low oil preassure and low oil level are two seperate things.. your car could be full of oil but still suffer from low pressure eg pick up pipe in the sump blocked..

on most of the vag cars flashing orange oil light is low oil level flashing red oil light and buzzer is low oil pressure.. not all models are fitted with a low oil level sensor. these are plugged into the sump. some sumps have a hole for the sensor others just have a blank plate.. i have seen some cars in the exact same year, model and engine and one could have the low oil level sensor and the other might not.
also what can happen is someone damages a sump on one of these (not hard to do) and one with a sensor can be replaced with one with no sensor..
