Vet fees

Had a new vet from the practice call out to a cow with metritis and mastitis last week. Spent 15 minutes max. I got the bill today an was surprised with the charge.

    Call Out Fee €51.00
    Examine Cow €11.35
    Administer Oral Fluids €11.35
    1 Rumen Booster € 3.50
    100cc Noroclav €37.50
    25cc Finadyne €10.00

    Total inc vat €124.70

Metritis didn't even clear up btw

The reason that I was so surprised was that I had another vet call from the same practice a few weeks ago at about 2 in the morning to assist with a cow calving (both legs down). He spent about 1 and a half hours here and between the cow and calf gave 4 injections and left a follow up injection too.

His charge was on the same bill.

Call and assist cow calving €102.00

Does your vet charge for every move he makes on a call out?

did he not give her a wash out ? , tbh if it wasnt fixed i would ring upo and complain. had an operation done on a cow last year and iasked the vet what jabs would the cow need she said none , cow got peritonitis , i complained and got operation and revisit and jabs for free

No, he didn't do a wash out. I think a lot of the younger vets rather treat with injectable antibiotics that do a wash out. Means that I will have to get vet back again and withhold the milk for a few days following treatment. Could really do with all the milk I can get in to the tank. I will mention it to the senior vet when he calls. I have given him a lot of business over the years so I imagine that he will knock something off the last visit. Must quiz him about the price structure too.

The service fee in the first call was €73.70. Was there a break-down on the €102? i.e. call out fee €x, assist cow calving €y?

I'd talk to the senior vet, otherwise he'll assume everyone is happy.

I used to have a vet that was similarly priced changed to a different one last year €35 for call out and work carried out unless here for a subtantial amount of time only charges extra for the medicine and he is quite reasonable with that too and i couldnt fault his expertise i find him fantastic..

Vets should always give an itemised bill and if not insist on it.
on your first call out was it the same cow with both problems, if so there should be no charge for "examine cow" as this should be in the call out fee, this charge is normally for second and subsequent animals.
Always question charges where they seem to be excessive, to prevent people from charging more, over charging another name

All sorted now. The senior vet offered to refund the total charge for the visit to the cow with metritis.

@funny man - I did think that the charge for examining the cow should be included in the call out. It was just the one cow. They should know that I am not calling them out for a chat about the weather.

thats good , its best to complain to them rather than annoying yourself about it

Agree with whealan1 and good to hear you got it sorted.

Good for the senior vet to hear it as well as otherwise how will he ever know what mistakes are being made with bills.
