My father is a small farmer and also works on a rural social scheme. Either by bad planning or no obligation to do so he has never obtained a P21 for the farm and now in order to retain his job in the Rural social scheme he has to get one. My question is can he apply for one for this year or does he have to obtain one for the previous years??

    Hi Byrne28,
A P21 is a statement of total income, tax credit and tax paid for a particular tax year. It also shows whether you have overpaid or underpaid tax for the year. (If you have overpaid tax, a cheque for the amount overpaid will be attached. If you have underpaid tax your tax office will indicate if, and how the underpayment will be collected - usually by reduction of your tax credits for a subsequent tax year.) Just be aware.

The quickest and easiest way to get the Form P21 is to request it online from PAYE Anytime. on www.revenue.ie . It is fairly straight forward.
You can also request a P21 by forwarding your Form P60 (and, if relevant, a Form P60 for your spouse) for the tax year to your local Revenue office and asking for a P21. He may need to submit his most recent set of accounts with the application.. hope this helps..Berettaman

Thanks for your reply, the issue is the fact he never got a P21 to include farm income, just his own personal income. Now he has been asked to get one for the farm aswell, i assume thats classed the same as a same business is it?

People who do not know tax issues should not offer advice. A P21 statement will only issue to employees not the self employed. If you have a farm you are deemed self employed and as such taxed under the self assessment system.

"People who do not know tax issues should not offer advice" I agree LivInt20...but you know nothing about me so how can you know I do not know tax issues? I would not offer advice unless qualified to do so but I digress..

He will get a p21 because the farm relief scheme is paid through the social welfare system ( It's deemed class A, and sometimes J -depending on circumstances-for Prsi purposes). I have obtained P21 balancing statements for people in similar positions (in my professional capacity). First step is to file a tax return and get a notice of assessment, he can the request a P21 balancing statement. However I have seen a notice of assement accepted in lieu of a P21 sometimes.
Also the RSS supervisor will tell you which year the P21 is needed for. In most parts of the country they are still taking 2009 tax Year P21s. hope that helps..
