Transit in Abu Dhabi on way to Oz - what's it like?

Flying to Oz in a few weeks' time and going Dublin - Abu Dhabi - Melbourne.

Anyone been through this airport? What's it like? I'd like to try some Arab food in the 2-3 hours we'll be there - are there facilities to do so, or is it all just boring McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts like most places?

    Bump.

So can I expect the airport to be very empty then? :D

I'm afraid it's the same as any modern airport anywhere, starbucks, burger king, duty free, treated like a child etc.

On the plus side its an easy transit... much better than the Heathrow haul to T5

    Not by a long shot.

My lasting memories are the extreme humidity (there was no apparent air conditioning) and heaps and heaps of people sitting on the ground because of lack of seats.

I just travelled through Abu Dhabi on the way home from Thailand in January. I wouldnt be expecting an Arab experience if I were you. Costa Cofffee and a donut was about as close as I got. It is quite busy and not very big.

Thanks guys for all the replies.

Maybe Costa Coffee will do a halal lamb shwarma and falafel wrap, and I can have a mint tea chai latte with it, for that "authentic" desert experience! :D

    it's a lovely airport...
we actually chose to fly etihad through abu dhabi instead of BA through heathrow for our trip to japan, in june, despite the BA lights being 2hrs shorter..

a chai latte is not something you would find in any arab location to be honest... but a mint/moroccan tea would be.
