GPS navigation while roaming in the US

I'm off to the states (California)next month for about 3 or 4 weeks and I plan on using my desire over there as my GPS unit.

Obviously I don't want to get screwed for data charges by vodafone while I'm there so I'm looking at alternatives. Here's where I am at the moment, I'm throwing it out to the collective hive mind that is boards.ie to see if I can get a better option then the ones below.

Option 1: Buy a local AT&T or T-Mobile pay as you go sim. Pro - gives me a mobile number while I'm there. Con - no idea what the story is with buying a payg sim that has data.

Option 2: Keep my vodafone sim, turn off the data and use something along the lines of mapdroyd. Pro - should negate the worry about data roaming charges. Con - I had a go of mapdroyd over there at christmas and found it a bit finicky, I can't say I'd be a huge fan of it.

Option 3: Get a sim from someone like MaxRoam which has data on it. Pro - no roaming charges. Con - might not be worth it.

Buy the US version of copilot. Its pretty cheap afaik, excellent software and has downloadable maps. Then just disable data connection

It's an option but I don't really want to have to pay for software and then not be able to use it fully by having to turn off the data. Surely mapdroyd is a better option then co pilot in that case?

Copilot doesn't need a data connection. It uses gps for navigation. I think the suggestion to turn off data was to prevent other software using it.
