Data network settings on 3gs

    Hi all,

I've got an apple unlocked 3gs presently on o2 and considering changing to vodafone.

I was looking at a friends iPhone over the w/e on vodafone and noticed they cannot access the data network settings to change apns, as this menu is invisible.

I presume as their phone is a vodafone purchased one this setting is locked down, but wondering if I move to v/f and update the carrier file, will this setting be locked also? I know I can get an app on Cydia to open this setting, may not even be applicable, but just wondering as it's my phone they shouldn't be able to lock it down.

    Thanks.

Well, it's set to live.vodafone.com, so why would you want to change it if you're moving to Vodafone?

I am on the 1GB ISP package with vodafone. My carrier settings have been updated. I used to have them set to isp.vodafone.ie , but this has presumably changed now (gone invisible). My issue is that when I was on the ISP APN, I could tether away with my laptop no problem and it would just come out of the bundle. Am I right in saying this is no longer the case because I am on the live APN?

    Cheers

A couple of features do not work on the live apn according to v/f themselves. I'd need to be able to switch between the other two.

The plan I would be moving onto would be a simply one with a data add on with access to all 3 apn's

I asked them about this and they told me you need the 10gb add on to tether, out of curiosity did you get your phone from v/f?

I didn't no. But the odd time I have tethered for 5/10 mins, and havent seen a charge. I just don't want to take any chances.

Im just looking through my bill here - the whole system is all over the place. On the front page it says I ave used 1.05MB of data, but looking through the call details, I can see I have used about 200Mb (which is about right).
I feel like I am lost in the system, where I can use all the data I want in any way, with no real impact on my bill, but I don't want a €200 bill coming in some day.

3 have a new 15gb limit as of this week, which would be tempting, tethering allowed.

Yes, I know they say that, but IME, since they did away with the proxy, everything works, despite their information.

I have had no problem tethering with the live APN or using VoIP or a lot of the other things they claim don't work.

They're full of it: I have a PAYG, I have of occasion put 20€ on for the free VF calls and texts, then used the 20 to buy the 5Gb add-on in 'extras'. I happily used this to 'tether' and any other mainstream activities I wanted to. I have also used the Live! APN with Vodafone 360 for 100mb a day abroad @ 39c (before they changed the pricing) in an iPhone and in a Mifi and have had as many as 5 peripherals connected to it. No issues.

It's unlimited. I now have 100Gb+ on my account.

The 15Gb refers to IF you systematically use this amount per monthly cycle and IF you impact on other users' performance, they MAY then decide to limit your access by slowing you down or some such.

It isn't something I would worry about unless you are streaming live telly day in, day out, or constantly downloading movies (not recommended over midband, anyway).

Inaddition, this data is available to you in other 3 countries (despite their T&Cs).

Thanks for all the info culabula. Will use the apn editing tool if needs be, looks like I won't need to though.

It is a bloody nuisance because I cannot edit my Justmobile SIM (now offering free data) in my iPhone. As it is an MVNO piggy-backing on Voodoo IRL, it's treating the SIM as such. I'll stick it in a Mifi later and mess with it.

Its a great deal to be fair to them.

So you think I can just tether away on the Live APN with the 1gb add on without worrying too much?
