How can the price of petrol and diesel in garages around the country be literally be going up by the day when we have a stockpile of above already here which was paid for in the old lower price, why cant they wait till they start using the new supplies when delivered to move prices up,When the trouble and unrest stops they are not that quick to pass on the benefits,More giant greedy corporations squeezing us for more profit :mad:can some explain please thank you.

It's business.. Garages make such little money per litre sold that if they know the next batch will be more expensive, they have to prepare for it.

    I'd hardly call them "giant".?

Garages companies buy in massive bulk.
They also buy not for now but for a set time period in the future - at a price set within a contract done up.
The price that they will have to pay for when that contract comes into fruition, is the price they will try and pass on to the public as soon as possible, to ensure that the money is there to back the contract up and see its paid.

Most of the garages here would be owned by big as in giant corporations would they not, just asking not saying :-)

That Carbon tax need to go into the Green bin.

Was talking to a bloke who was working in Topaz about the profit on the petrol he said the garage would make about 3c per litre of petrol.

It's more along the lines of this greedy goverment robbing the motorists of there cash and not putting it back into new roads and upgrades. At the end of the day, bad roads are going to put peoples lives at risk, with the swerving to avoid the potholes.

TBH, give it two weeks and it will be 2.00€ a litre. Seriously thinking about getting a bike and dropping the car.

yep i agree..it wil be 1.50 a ltr in the coming weeks, we have wankerface john gormley to blame for this..

The new government should seriously look at reducing this "carbon tax" on the cost of fuel

so much for the people who say flying will eventually become reserved for the ultra rich think that will soon be the case for driving as well

i'm starting to think this petrol price hike isn't a bad thing, where we live is usually traffic jams from 8-9am and 4-6pm, since petrol hit the €1.50 mark not one traffic jam have i seen :)

i have seen a lot of cranky faced children walking to/from school though!:pac:

Same here. Normally I have to make sure I leave for work before 8.20 or else take a different route into work. For the last week, it hasn't been a problem

I have an electric motor from a cement mixer laying around and a few old car batteries. I'm thinking of pulling the engine out of my car and putting these in instead.

It will be awfully slow but will keep me going till the donkey arrives from Amazon.

If the price of petrol doesnt keep going up then we are letting the terrorists win.

Or is it the other way around ?

    I really cant remember

    We'd be helping out Gadaffi

Really we could just send Joe Duffy into Libya so he can quell the protests by having people call into his show, think they done a great job and not bother protesting anymore.

I honestly dispute that. Plenty of garages like Topaz (up here) that are charging 10c over the odds for diesel. If they are only making 3c in profit they have either really, really bad business advisors or a dose of the stupids.

Wouldn't trust a word they say TBH.

I know!!! I nearly crashed the car on the way to work this morning when I saw that. Cheapest (ha! using the word cheap:rolleyes:) I've seen it anywhere is €1.48.9:(

Its simple, petrol goes up as the garages are not making the same money from their breakfast rolls as they were.

A usefull site is www.pumps.ie It gives you average prices etc but there's also a forum which explains quite a bit on fuel and fuel pricing.
Garages are finding it particulalrly tough now as the once huge deli trade is dying...

What's the betting that when oil prices drop again the garages won't drop prices to match,it has happened before, some are simply price gouging.
The ones down my way were publically accused of running a price fixing cartel, which of course they denied while charging the highest prices in the region.

i recently started using cooking oil in my VW golf after hearing from a friend whos doing it for years that you could and all it does is cause a small bit more wear to the engine than petrol and it costs a fraction of the price. Usually pick up those large 5 litre containers at Lidl or Aldi.

151.9 for petrol in Lucan Maxol since yesterday.

And by the way the carbon tax (currently 15c per tonne) is set to double over the the next couple of years as per the 4 year plan agreed with the EU/IMF last year. I think I read it will be 5c in 2012 and 10c in 2014.

Be careful you don't get caught by customs, any fuel is liable for tax.I'm sure you keep note of what you use and send a cheque to the revenue.;)

A friend of mine lives in Holland and paid €1.70 a litre this morning for unleaded! That's where we're headed too... (Edit: €1.70, not Holland)

Given that much of Holland is less than a couple of hours drive from the Belgian and/or German borders I find this somewhat surpising ??

prices for diesel and petrol change every wednesday and friday, and the last 3 weeks have seen over 8c go on a litre of diesel and it's not expected to drop anytime soon, with another 0.25c rise already predicted for wednesday, though this could be as high as 1c per litre, according to the Oil Market Journal and Platts.

the average station makes 6c per litre profit, but were happy to drop it to a lower margin in boom times as the deli counter is far more profitable. It was in their interest to charge the loweest price they could to try and be cheaper than the prices from fuel card providers.

now the deli business is dying the forecourts are having to increase margin back to the 6c level, from having been as low as 3c per litre in places.

Also, delivery prices have to be taken into account. if your garage is near to Cork or Dublin you will pay a lower delivery charge for your fuel, and can therefore charge less than a garage in Athlone, for example.

The government have also been responsible for an increase in duty/carbon tax of 18c per litre in the last two years. Without this our petrol and diesel would be significantly cheaper.

The busier garages will change price more often, as they receive far more oil deliveries than a small station who may only get one fill a fortnight.

Just get a fuel card, you get a price update twice a week, and you can then decide to use it if the price you are quoted is cheaper than the price at the forecourt you pull in to. Simple.

Well this is what he said:
Just paid €1.70/liter for unleaded. Christ.
I was in Germany in January and petrol was more expensive than here, so I don't know why you find it surprising.

Do the likes of Holland and Germany have different road tax rules than us? Some places incorporate it into the price of fuel rather than charging a second tax.
Gormley was questioned recently on fuel prices and tax but dodged the questions and waffled on about reduced vrt and that we should all buy new cars with lower emmisions and tax bands-CLOWN. Thank God he's gone, hope the new Govt. revue his policies.
