The apps probably require a higher version of the s/w, you need to look when downloading the app, it normally tells you on the iTunes store what version of iOS is required to run it.

When you're looking at the app entry on the iTunes store, look down the left column and you'll see a 'Requirements' header under which it will typically say 'requires iOS 3.2 or later' or something similar.

thanks coylemj , is there anyway to get the later version of the software onto the ipod ? or is it too old ?

I think the latest version they can take is 4.2 so you should be ok to update it. Look on the ipod tab when you plug it into itunes / it should automatically tell you about any available updates

iOS4 will not run on an iTouch G1...

    Additional Information

Note: iOS 4 is not available for iPod touch (1st generation).

See this web page, scroll down to below the support grid....

You will need to purchase iOS3 from Apple, see the details here. If I recall correctly it cost about 7 to 9 euros, it was a while back so can't be sure.
