Hi, just started in a new place and they're shutting down the CtW Scheme in a months time so I need to choose a bike and get the process started fairly quick, just looking for general recommendations please, what's the best bike Ill get in that price range?

perhaps pick a few from the available range and ask people for their views/experience on each model

Are you prepared to spend €700 WITH the CtW scheme, or is the retail price of the bike not to exceed €700. Big difference!

Oh yeah should have clarified that, the retail price of the bike is not to exceed €700-750.

Man that Boardman sounds awesome! And it does look good in other pics, I think I might be going for it if nothing better comes up in the next couple of days.

That review is for a different Boardman bike than the one I suggested.
Here's a review of the bike I linked to.

What kind of bike is this exactly? Some kind of Specialized Allez but is it comp or whatever? How much does it weigh and is it any good?

Looks like an Allez 16. It's an 8 speed (16 gears) with Shimano's poorest groupset, the 2300. Weighs 10kg.

Thanks, Im thinking its going to be the Boardman, dont really see anything else that light with good components for the money, cant find a bad review anywhere either.

Some thoughts on this topic that were covered already and you might want to read when trying to source a 2010 Boardman.

..but if you can stretch your budget you should go for this. Much better spec than the boardman and the listed weight is 0.75 kg lighter.

Btw, I have both a Canyon road bike and a Canyon mtb and I'm very happy/impressed with both.

Hmmm, dont want to go that high tbh, Im breaking my budget as it is. Thanks for the help but are there any other options? I want a lightweight bike, the 2011 Boardmans are gone back up to 10.4 KG, Id love to get an 8 KG bike, rang Coolock Halfords and he thinks they'll be gone by the time I get my Cycletowork stuff sorted out, waiting for a HR person to come back from holiday.

I don't think you'll get anything that light for that money. Unless you stumble on a bargain on the big websites.

Wiggle and Chainreactions have these at the price:

Hmmm, is 2kg of a difference very noticeable on a roadbike?

2kg I would say so, but then I don't know what my own bike weighs. Around 10kg I would guess. EDIT: Its supposedly 9.38kg.

The Beone Rosso is 7.4kg and costs €2K (€3K RRP). Thats a 1 kg frame with all ultegra.

That Boardman is 8.85kg and is probably the lightest you can go for that money, if you're lucky enough to source one.

    Lose 4.4lbs and you've already negated the 2kg :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,061 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Id look like a Trocaire ad if I lose anymore weight.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn thats a fine looking machine :(

Im going to beg and plead at work tomorrow to get the ball rolling on it, and ring Halfords aswell and see if a manager will hold one for a week for me.

You're looking for way too much for much too little. For the 8kg category you'd really be looking at carbon. The cheapest you'd probably get new would be a planet x but that'll set you back upwards of 1200. There is this for 899 (8.2 kg listed)but other than that you'd be looking at buying secondhand where the BTW scheme could not be applied.

Very noticeable if you're cycling up a hill. There are a lot of other factors which also contribute to the performance and feel of a bike.

Actually Ribble have a Alu bike for €750, delivery is ridiculous money though. I think someone on here got a ribble bike delivered cheaper.

But with 2200/2300 right? They tend to advertise their bike builds from the lowest price and hence with the cheapest components. Slap 105 on that and you'll probably be talking an extra 300.

    Shiply.com
I'd still rather the Canyon with SRAM for €30 extra but lower shipping cost. I'd stretch to the Canyon with Shimano though. For €100 extra one gets a mix of 105 & Ultegra, GP4000 tyres, a seatpost upgrade and a saddle upgrade(?).

    Meh. It aint my money.

Well I got onto Halfords again and they're holding the boardman until tomorrow for me so I just have to shoot in and get a quote and put my name down for the C2W scheme then they'll hold it for a month until I get it sorted, brilliant stuff, thanks for the help everybody especially Hail 2 Da Thief for the Coolock tip, 2 of the last ones in the country.

isn't the boardman offer only on the website only?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,061 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Boardman bikes are only available for Reserve and Collect.

Well its reserved for a month in that store now so if worst comes to worst I can just buy it on the site and collect in Coolock, Ill find out tomorrow.

the boardman seems a good bike but its very plain looking:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,061 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

I think its great looking, I thought the same thing looking at the flat pic on the Halfords site but in person its really sleek and fast looking. The extra 1 or 2 kg lighter than others in this price bracket and the rave reviews everywhere I look sealed the deal for me.

Less chance of being stolen aswell compared to a flashy paintjob I suppose.
