I may have been seeing things, but passing through Ashbourne, at the last moment, I saw what looked like two diesel pumps and a hut, nothing else, mounted on a concrete little forecourt, where there used to be some waste ground.
There was a sign, I am almost sure it said Diesel 1.33 Euro
Has anyone else seen this or know what it's about.

I don't know if this place or prices exists, but really, would you want to fill your car up with fuel from an "establishment" like that?

Thats sorta what went through my mind
Where would they get ropey diesel,? surley diesel is diesel.
I may also have been mistaken, but I had seen them working feverishly at the sight the last few days.
The sign definitly said diesel 1.33, but there was other writing on the notice as well.

Plenty of threads on this forum about people getting bad diesel and it screwing with their car.

It wasn't marked gas oil or green diesel? :)

It exists and 1.33 is the price. Its only opened in the past couple of days and is a fairy ropey looking set up. They only sell diesel and home heating oil. Fair few cars going in though. Can't believe they got planning permission for it

Maybe it was red/green diesel, I only caught a glimpse of the sign.

    Ah, thanks furtzy.
I was amazed how quickly they built the site.
Is it road car diesel? There was nobody there when I went by.

Indeed, I know a few people who have got caught with crap fuel around Dublin and it can cause damage that is catastrophic and expensive.

Look at it from this perspective: I've noticed that on average, every month the PSNI / Customs up north are raiding these diesel laundering shibíns that are capable of producing thousands of litres of illicit fuel every week. There is no doubt in my mind that this fuel is NOT solely being produced for NI sale. Personally I'd stick to a mainstream garage that receives it fuel from its own brand tankers.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 279 ✭✭Bumpstop

I know it might look a bit ropey, but surley it has to be legit.
It's in broad daylight, right outside a large town.
If the diesel was bad surley word would get around very quickly, and they would have to close, so what would be the point.
There may be a good reason why they have cheap diesel.
I am sure although this place looks a bit minimalistic, it must have to conform to all sorts of codes and regulations, just like a large garage forecourt.

There is a similar style place operating here in Limerick for the last couple of months. Basically all they have are 2 diesel pumps connected to an above surface tank in a yard. They are selling diesel at €1.32.99 per litre. I read stories in the local papers that they were supposed to be closed down by the council for health and safety reasons but they are still trading.

Personally I would not buy diesel from them, God only knows where it came from and where would you stand if it did serious damage to your car.

there is a huge amount of that laundered diesel being produced and it has to be going somewhere so there are an awful lot of cars being slowly damaged which is storing up a lot of problems for people buying secondhand diesel cars in the future we are a very shortsighted nation save a few pence today to hell with tomorrow

What's up with the laundered or otherwise "lower quality" diesel?
Too much carbon after burning? clogs cats n stuff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 890 ✭✭✭lifer_sean

Don't they use acid to remove the dye from the diesel so that it isn't green/red any more ? You don't want that stuff anywhere near your engine, especially the modern diesels with the high pressure pumps.

Do you know anyone that has bought diesel from there and if they have had any trouble? I havent heard of anyone that has bought diesel there.

Anyone a google maps link to this site? Is it the Slane side of Ashbourne? If so wasn't that an existing site years back?

I saw it on the weekend, if you pass the applegreen garage that is on your right, straight on at traffic lights and it is on the left opposite car sales garage.

2 pumps, looks odd, a lot of space as if designed for trucks.

Never seen a site to be developed so quick :D. Was out for a walk one night and a couple of guys with N.I. reg plates floating the concrete in the dark :D.

The price is 133.9c per litre diesel or 75c per litre home heating oil. Seen a car in it tonight as I passed. Dont think id take the chance .... see how it goes for a few months or so and feedback is received .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 Upptowngirl

I passed last Sat and thought I was seeing things. Price is €1.33 and yeah 2 pumps and a hut. On my way abck out of Ashbourne there was a queue of cars?? Remember just down the road is a police station so it has to be legit.. Gonna drive over tomorrow and have a proper look... But I would be afraid, dont wanna **** up my car... Jury is out..

Meant to say it is just across from the Fire Station on the Ashbourne Rd between Tadgh Riordan and Apple...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,704 ✭✭✭squod

I was paying 1.32 'till the 3c went on. I can't see how people are making out price equals quality.

There was a HUGE case of contaminated Derv in Ashbourne about 3 weeks ago. Close to 40 vehicles with a LOT of damage done to there insides, the guts of 20,000 litres of very dirty fuel, there is currently a lot of lab testing of their respective samples going on.

I'm not saying that it is/was anything to do with this particular place, but if I was a customer in Ashbourne, based on whats going on over there I wouldn't buy it if it was 50c a litre.

Hammertime, Could they be making a profit at that price if the diesel is kosher?

Highly unlikely it was from this place as 3 weeks ago I think it still had grass on it :D

Passed through Ardee on Saturday and diesel was 136.9 in two garages ... legit looking ones so goes to show the profit all the other garages are making on the current prices.

Those two are owned by the same person, and he is far from legit. The garages look well, but I wouldn't put the diesel in the car. It is more than likely the magic colour changing variety from South Armagh.:-)

Becuase no one cares. In 7 years I've been visited twice by customs and excise to have fuel tested. And if they catch you with washed derv etc you get the option to empty and clean out your tanks and they take no further action as its first offence. Its a joke.

Regarding the question if they can make money I dont think they can, selling it at 134 is about 13 cent below schedule price and the highest credits I've ever ever heard of is 17c, and thats taken both the wholesaler and the retailer into account.

It may be a big distributor using it to get rid of part loads etc, but its very strange. I would not really have a huge issue with it per se, but the fact its in Ashbourne, has been setup overnight, and considering the thousands of litres of contaminated fuel VERY recently taken out of sites in Ashbourne is a huge red flag. No one is naive enough to believe that the people stuck with many thousands worth of contiminated fuel are just going to kiss it goodbye, especially if they can offload it even below cost to a 'new' buyer who isn't intending to hang around.

There was a place on Collins Avenue last year, same setup, cheap diesel with just pumps and a hut. Not sure if it's still going, but they do seem to pop up regularly enough.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭furtzy

Don't see any planning application for anything like this in the past year. Passed by yesterday and the they were building a block wall around a huge oil tank....place looks extremely dodgy

Been past this place a few times over the weekend. Topped up the car with €20, no issues but there was already €100 in the tank from Texaco. Seems to be quite a few cars using it. Can't be laundered Diesel, the Guards are just down the road.

It's still there.. I had a thread about it a while back as I was curious too and the feedback from peoplehere seemed to be that it was alright.

Used it a few times without any issues but literally only a few times as mostly I buy on the topaz fuelcard and just pay the one bill at the end of the month

To be honest (and just my personal opinion before the Garda Defence Brigade jump in :D) I wouldn't take that as any insurance either as chances are they're topping up their own private cars in the place anyway regardless

Lovely If i ever pass thataway I'll be filling up.

Love driving an ancient diesel that will run on anything :D

I'm telling you here and now that it is not genuine Derv.

Believe me or not, but I'm TELLING you now it is not normal fuel.

    (allegedly of course)

What are you implying, that it is not full diesel or the coloured variety with colour taken out?

That "garage" has now closed, and moved operations up along the N2, for another few weeks.
That should answer any questions regarding legitimacy
By the way any one who did get diesel there should really get a mechanic to give their car the once over, that is of course if its still running.

If it smells like sh1t, looks like sh1t, then it most likely is sh1t

There's a similar job just opened on Whitechurch Road beside South Dublin Ford, Rathfarnham. There was a filling station there previously but has been closed for a while. Couple of lads in there now from Norn Iron selling diesel only @ €1.40 / ltr. No franchise, no vat receipts and probably dodgy fuel.

Margins on fuel are very small so my guess is no!

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and sounds like a duck its a shower of dodgy feckers offloading hooky diesel and that's an end to it.

No way would I put that in my car.

(nb my car is a petrol but still)

It's now closed, the tank, pumps, generator, little hut and everything else including the sign have all gone, so you can draw your own conclusions from that.

There was a significant sum spent on ground works and the tank bund, so I am thinking that they moved in without planning permission, and for once, Meath County Council have moved at a rate that's better than they usually do to act on this.

Either way, the site that has been sitting there for a long time at a stupid price is once again vacant, and likely to remain so for a very long time, as it's too small to do anything sensible with given the shape and location.

    Time will tell

    Steve

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

4 counties oil in Dundalk dropped their price 2c a litre this week, from 135.9 to 133.9/litre. <snip libellous comment>

My husband has being using this diesel for a number of weeks and I put €50 in last Sat. My jeep running fine. They moved apparently due to the fact that they had no planning permission for the entrance but had for the rest.. One of the guys there told my husband that and that the garage across the road had issues..

Anyway got a text from them to say they are on the old dublin rd behind the white house pub.. the guy was taking ph numbers last weekend so that they could contact customers when they were back in business hence the text.. He had pages of customer contact numbers...I will be going back...

I paid 141.9 cent for a litre of Diesel in Drogheda today. Cheapest I've seen it all year.

This is €133.9 at the moment on special offer.. Pretty good savings to be made..

Is your jeep an old model if you don't mind me asking, new diesel engine would clog up injectors if using dirty fuel, old ones probably fine though.
