    Hi All,

My wife's looking at a '04 Octavia and it has an EGR valve fault on it.

Is this an expensive thing to repair/replace? Or should she walk away?

    Thanks in advance.......

I had to replace the valve on an '02 A4 (1.9 TDi) last year. Part was €225 approx and labour was less than €50. Any further info. you want or need will have to come from someone more qualified than I I'm afraid.

Any idea what the fault is? If it's blocked then there are methods of cleaning it. If it's broken it'll need replacement.

Not sure, is it expensive to replace?

I heard recently that the valve on an '02 A4 (1.9 TDi) costs €225 approx and the labour is less than €50.
Seeing as both cars are VAG models the pricing will probably be similar.

You need to talk to a Skoda repairer to get an exact price, but you also need to know what's wrong before you go spending €300 willy nilly.

Make sure it isn't something other than the EGR valve. If the seller says it is that, get someone else to confirm it first.

Octavia's are ten a penny so would it not be easier to buy one with no fault?

Oh I know I know...... She's been looking for one for ages and any one she has found has had high miles and given the miles she does......

I went and had a look at this car yesterday it has one owner, low mileage and is unmarked with a full service history (I'm going to contact the garage today). too be honest I reckon the back seats were never used. I spent nearly two hours with it and the fault never came up when I was driving it and the other half said the same it was the owner that pointed it out....... They also will let me bring it to a skoda garage (of my choice) to have it checked.......

    That sounds fair enough.

Get it checked and be sure it's gone.
Get it in writing on the order form that an EGR fault existed, and if it reoccurs within the next x months it will be repaired without quibble or delay, whether covered by the official used car warranty or not.
Hopefully that'll give enough comfort that you won't be worrying about it the whole time and you can get on with enjoying your new car :).

As above get it checked to make sure, If the car shows up code p0400 this can be anything...problems with the vacuum system, boost solenoids...very nightmare process of elimination...The inlet main can be caked up with carbon, I had a vectra with all of the above  it's gone now tho :pac:
