Any advice and how to go about this?

Reckon my car value is about 7k tops and I will take most diesels once similar spec and mileage but I can afford to be without my car.

Would any dealer do a straight swap?

Was looking at vectras which seem to be in price range.

    Any other cars u recommend?

You will have to be prepared to loose money on the deal. Any dealer that would swap would still make a profit on the transaction. If you were swapping you'd be struggling to swap for any diesel valued over 5.5k.

    I was thinking that.

So best bet is to sell private....be roughly without car for 2 weeks while trying to buy private

People will only swap if they strongly think they are getting the better side of the deal. There are exceptions but usually the peorson that wants to swap gets the raw deal.

Better to sell, buy some dirt heap for a few hundred and swop the insurance while waiting to sell it, if you cant afford to buy the one you want first. Id say youd get 6500 easy for your car. I spent 25500 on a new one in 2006= 1.6 fsi auto, so it sounds like bargain territory to me . The diesels are much more though as petrols dont seem to be flavour of the month anymore.
