Donald Trump, American billionaire and hopeful candidate for the US Presidency said in an interview recently that he believes gays should not be allowed to marry and they they should not receive medical or civil benefits as heterosexual couples.

What a lovely man he is. Let's all be glad we (mostly) don't live in America and hope he doesn't get anywhere near the US Presidency race next year...

Sure, if that happened here it would be a massive talking point. But it didn't.

The Republican party in the US are well known for that stance. They backed an amendment to the US constitution to define marriage as exclusively between a man and woman, under 20% of their supporters are pro equal marriage rights. Even amongst Democrats equal marriage rights still have a minority following.

Obama defines marriage as "something sanctified between a man and a woman", its debatable whether that is his own personal opinion or just the voice of the white house but the fact still stands that Donald Trumps point of view is nothing new, and America will be waiting a long time before they can honestly call themselves the land of the free.

You would have to wonder are these his personal or political views..Somehow I think they're his political views.

It's a shame politicians use the gay issue for personal gain.

whether they are his personal or political beliefs is not really important but he is entitled to his opinion be it right or wrong ...its called free speech

    Nobody is disputing that.

Whenever I despair about backward Ireland, I just look at America. And shudder.

Don't despair just yet, the new government looks like they're going to kick us most of the way towards equality in the law.

And here's to hoping they stick to that promise.

And here's to hoping they stick to that promise.

I have a re-occuring nightmare that Labour will end up quashed like a bug, as the Greens were (much their own fault really.) But we shall see...

In regards to Trump, he's just your usual American dream Republican i.e. he made a ton of money in a capitalist market. In comparison to other potential candidates, I wouldn't even consider his statements that conservative.

Huckabee stated in a New Yorker piece last summer: ‘I do believe that God created male and female and intended for marriage to be the relationship of the two opposite sexes, male and female are biologically compatible to have a relationship. We can get into the ick factor, but the fact is two men in a relationship, two women in a relationship, biologically, that doesn’t work the same."

Anyone whose counter argument to a liberal reporter grilling him on the Defense of Marriage Act is rationally based on "ickiness", isn't fit to run a country.

I'm almost impressed that Trump got a coherent sentence out in light of Huckabee's ramblings these days. (Almost.)
