    Hi all,

Does anyone know where the crankcase breather filter (that protects the turbo) is on a 2005 BMW 320d E90 model?

Has anyone had experience changing the breather/filter? (photos?)

I'd like to replace it myself if possible. (reasonably handy with servicing my own cars).

    regards,
    Paddy.

    Thanks.

That link is for the e46 model

However, it provides me with an intuition as to its location and shape.

    Perfect. thanks.

It's in the same spot as the E46, the pollen filter housing is the main big difference. There are 6x 8mm screws holding it down and then 2 more holding the large panel underneath it. You'll have to undo the right hand strut brace by flipping off the round cover at the base of the windscreen and using a female torx socket to undo the bolts holding it down. (I think you'll need an E12 and E14 socket, although am not 100% on the sizes)

When you're reassembling the air filter housing, make sure the rear, lowermost screw is fully home before attempting to screw the others it - it won't screw in if the housing is not sitting right.

Thanks for the guide. I will order the part from BMW.

Ya, that air breather is a nightmare alright to get in thats for sure. I had a job figuring it out when I serviced the car a month ago.

I presume I can replace the crankcase breather without also having to replace the oil. I done about 2000 miles on this new oil.

Yeah, the oil shouldn't need replacing.

The worst bit about the air filter housing is the tab that runs along the bottom of it, if it's not sitting right, the housing won't sit in place.

The breather is basically the same position and design on all diesel BMW's.

    :eek::eek:
I don't know how much the filter is off hand but its only a small part and takes in the range of 10-20 mins to change!

    €275 is insane!

The new Votex type filter is around €70 from the dealers(at least for an E46 320d and an E53 X5)

Is the little filter without the plastic casing available on its own anywhere?.
