Fell out of bag! Samsung NC10 - how do I rescue screen

It fell out of its messenger bag

Had a few knocks already but always survived - this time turned on and half the screen is gone - not cracked but the lcd has leaked so you can only see about 1/4 screen

I was very fond of it , and wondered if any one could suggest how fixable it is

e.g. do I try leave it into some one or will the charge make it not worthwhile?

I wouldn't be the most technical person in the world, and while I'd try a DIY fix, they almost always go wrong ( though chap at work seems to have the knack when I ask for a help)

    Really any suggestions appreciated

A quick ebay search suggests you might get a replacement for 50 to 70 euro, plus post. There seem to be more than 1 size - 10.1"/10.2". Try googling for disassembly instructions if you feel confident. A shop will probably charge 100-150 at a guess.

Yeah you'll have to buy a new screen.

Here's a link of how to install a new one (I know it mentions touchscreen but the steps would be the same).

That's an awkward one... Given that it's gonna cost quite a bit of money (~100 euros) to get the screen, yet a new Samsung NC10 is only worth about 150-170 Sterling (going by Ebay).

One thing I would suggest is to MAKE SURE that there are no other issues caused by the dropping of the laptop.. check all the keys on the keyboard, ensure that the power cable is still actually charging the laptop and the battery is holding charge, and all the onboard electronics are working (i.e. wireless, LAN, hard drive, memory).... Worse thing would be if you bought and installed the screen only to find that there is something else broken as a result of the drop..

^^ Good advice. Plug in an external monitor to test it.

If its still working ok,put an ad on www.adverts.ie, wanted screen for samsung nc10.check the cd drive, and usb ports, and wifi unit.
or you could sell it on adverts ie for parts, and just buy another laptop.
or look on ebay.ie, for a replacement screen.

I but the lcd has leaked

no point in an external screen etc , if it looks like the screen leaked , it has actually cracked so you need a new screen.

Connect it to a screen thru vga, to test out the netbook, make sure its wqorking ok, be4 you buy a new lcd replacement.or use vga in on a hdtv, resolution 1024x768,set refresh rate to 60mhz.

Did you get this sorted out and if so how much did it wind up costing?

I tripped and clattered my knee into the screen of my girlfriends NC10 last night so trying to figure out the best solution. The laptop is powering up but we can see nothing on the screen except the leak and white light.

Tried plugging in a VGA cable but it's not showing anything on screen. Is there some settings that need to be changed to set up an external monitor or should it be plug and play?

    Thanks.

Its actually very easy to replace screens guys. There are disassembly guides on youtube and screen replacement guides. Just be careful, Dont pull to hard and wear an anti ESD strap and it should be fine. really!

Aye, it looks simple enough but they make a fair point above in saying that until I get it connected to an external monitor and see that everything else is still functioning as normal I'd be taking a chance replacing the screen.

The other option I'm considering is buying a second hand NC10 and swapping out the hard disk. Which would be the easier operation?

    Cheers.

To get the screen to show on an external display you need to hold down FN and F4 keys while connected to the external display.

Just check the screen on a friends computer. Take out there SVGA (the blue one) from there computer and plug it into the side of yours!
Then take a deep breath and switch it on.

Plugged it in and am getting a no signal message despite using FN and F4. :(

Started it up again though, typed in the password and got the windows login music. That has to be a good sign, right?

Press it a few times with the VGA cable connected, until you get a display, make sure the monitor is on the correct source, ie VGA over DVI/hdmi etc.

Just replaced an NC10 screen recently myself

Is it the 10.1 or the 10.2?

You'll get a screen for about 50 euros or less delivered
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=samsung+nc10+screen&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Screen replacement is doable, but tricky, take it slow and easy, some parts are brittle - videos are on youtube how to change the screen.

Sometimes it won't show up if you plug an external screen, you have to be into windows then playing with the FN + screen keys

It was a VGA into a TV with VGA input, no go no matter how many times I pressed FN and F4. It definitely booted up though as when I typed in her password and hit enter I got the Windows startup music.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks for the assistance.

Not quite sure, is there markings on the laptop to indicate which it is? If I measure it, it's diagonally right?

Was the quality of the screen you received up to scratch?

    Thanks for the help.

Did you try logging into windows and pressing the function key & F4? As said above some machines need to load the hotkey software before input can change, also try booting the laptop up connected to the VGA port with VGA source see if it picks up the video

    Success! :-)

Plugged it into a monitor at work and it popped up on screen automatically! :D Gonna back up everything tomorrow to an external HDD.

Then it's a matter of determining the screen size and ordering a replacement. Anyone care to recommend a good vendor?

    Thanks.

    Check the Samsung NC10 forums
    http://www.sammynetbook.com/forum/forums/8-Samsung-NC10-N110-N120-N130-N140-N310-Forum?

Ebay is perfectly fine if you check the feedback, buy from big sellers, new only.
Here is a good seller, this is the 10.1, he has info on which models support it
    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Samsung-NC10-10-1-LED-Screen-NOT-SUITABLE-10-2-/110666033974?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL&hash=item19c435ab36

    99.8% feedback (54 screen's sold and 8761 items total)

Remember gloss is better quality but reflects, matte is "less" quality (i prefer matte) but can be used outside etc due to nonreflective surface
