Adult content sites

    Hi All,
Hope I'm in the right place with this one.
    Windows Xp Media centre ed.

There are two unconnected websites where I have accessed adult content for two years without any problems whatsoever. I actually consider them very safe compared to most others. Both sites provide video content.
In the last two days I can connect to the home pages of these sites but not watch or dowload any videos. I have not changed any security settings and have looked at the various settings in the 'Security Centre' and nothing seems to have changed. All other web browsing appears normal
I use '3' as my internet provider. I have Spybot scanning every 24hrs and AVG running.

    Any thoughts on this please.
    Thanks for reading.

Is it just video down and can you still see images?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,046 ✭✭✭Fracture

try updating Flash. It happened me before, wasnt just adult sites it was most videos on most sites, it turned out i needed to update the flash drivers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭the watchman

    Hi again,
I can see still images advertising different videos.
And Youtube stuff is working fine.!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,339 ✭✭✭✭LoLth

have you installed anything recently that could in any way shape or form play video files? It may have changed your file association (even for flash content) awway from IE or whatever browser you are using. then DEP could be stopping the website form opening the application.

and no, no-one is allowed to ask for the URL with the user/pass so you can "test a solution" :p

Is that with a 3 Mobile Broadband Dongle or via by tethering to a phone?

When I get stuff on pages that don't work the first thing I do is right click where I think the pic,vid or whatever should be and find its URL properties and then copy and past the URL into another browser page to see if the link opens on its own, but from a security point of view that isn't always a good idea ;)

Hi again. thanks for comments so far but not having much luck. I don't remember installing anything this last week. I have just updated Adobe Flash player to 10.2.152.32. Still no improvement. I have IE and Firefox but only ever use Firefox.

There is a gold shield in the system tray saying it wants to update something but it never tells you what it is. The last time I did it, it was something I never use so normally ignore the shield stuff. I have windows set to automatic updates.

    What next folks:confused:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭William Powell

Have you worked out what specific file types won't open?

Have you then downloaded samples of those file types to try and play them without useing the browser?

Try also in another location, to rule out an issue with the local mast. There isn't any filter on 3 Mobile Broadband or the NBS but there is a content filter on data that comes via a Mobile Phone Data package.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,339 ✭✭✭✭LoLth

click on the gold shield and start the update process, select "custom" on the first screen that pops up, the next screen will list what updates are pending. You can use the KB#### number to look up more details on the patch pending before you install it and there is a synopsis of the patch (sometimes with a link to the KB article) in th elower window.

The update say its Office XP service pack 3. 52.3MBs????
I'm almost positive I already have it ?.
will I install, Please say no lol, My internet connection is very slow/ I dealt with this elswhere!
My feeling is that the update is part of Office that I never use !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭the watchman

If anyone can read this screenshot of plugins on Firefox is there anything that I should remove or disable.

A bit more information. I just launched Internet Explorer and the problem is exactly the same. Does this tell us somthing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭the watchman

OK, I've just uninstalled Realplayer as there may have been an update to that recently. Still no joy, same problem persists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭the watchman

Thought: As the problem is the same when using IE or Firefox would it be reasonable to assume that it is a windows problem therefore I should be looking for a recent windows update and possibly remove it:confused:

Is it possible that it's as simple as your account having expired? Do you get any error messages from the site?

Hi mod thank you for coming back to me.
No these sites are free to use, have never needed to sign up to use them over the last two years. I'm sure it is something on my computer.
As no one has come up with the answere yet would it be possible to repost elswhere to generate some more replies please.

gonna move this over to the computers and technology. Might get some fresh views there.

In all honesty, "I cant watch adult content so I must remove a windows security update" really isnt going to work well on the security forum :D

oh and yes, if the update says Office XP SP3 then its an update for office. If your internet speed is good enough for adult sites, then its good enough to do patching. the fact that the shield is down the bottom means that the update has been downloaded already so your connection speed has nothing to do with it anymore.

Have you tried using system restore to bring you PC back to when it used to work?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Restore
(do a google search for you system specific instruction)
At least then you'd get it working and perhaps you can install the updates again afterward.

Can you see the Flash logo animation and what vs is displayed?

If so, then try UNchecking the hardware acceleration by right clicking on that logo and Settings and UNchecking it at Display Settings. See if that helps.

    Youtube works perfectly

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭polyfusion

Could be issues with the sites; it's possible they are related, and maybe just having problems with their video servers. One way to check would be to verify if they're working on another PC, or try other browsers.

Is the video embedded in the web page, or do they download and then play in a media player when downloaded?

Hi all, I can see I will have to collate all the info from previous postings detailing all steps taken so far.

I believe the two sites are completeley unrelated.
    Adobe Flash updated.
    Real Player uninstalled.
No windows updates have taken place.
    No new applications installed.
    Spybot scan every 24hrs.
    AVG running.
    General security settings appear unchanged.
Same Problem while using IE or Firefox.
Two site are free to use, never needed to sign up. Using one for 2 years the nearer 4years.
One is just web cam viewing the other video.
    Youtube working fine.
Able to watch video from other sites, non adult.
Windows XP Media centre ED. computer 4 years old.
'3' internet conection. Dongle. €20 per month.
And no dress code in Dáil anymore, very colourful now lol. PInk is in.lol

If possible, download a linux mint liveCD and try access the videos with that? Rather than look at all the little things that could maybe be affecting you, try rule out lots of things in one go, e.g. if it doesn't work with another OS you can assume it's related to your provider or the sites themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,983 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

cant believe this hasnt been suggested yet, but can you try with a different internet provider? is there an open LAN or wifi cpnnection that you can log onto? i know it sounds dodgy, but can you take your PC over to a friends house (using his/her internet) and go to those websites and see if they play? that'll rule in/out 3 straight away?

You defo need to do what snowbat advised a few posts ago.
This has been an issue with 3 of late and I believe it could be what has happened on your connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,012 ✭✭✭✭Cuddlesworth

If youtube works then its very very unlikley its anything to do with your laptop itself. As above, contact 3 and ask for the adult content filter to be removed.

Have a look at the Firefox update. Could this have caused it. Although I think the problem started a little before the 2nd March, there again I could be wrong.

Will have a look at that '3' blocking adult content soon. Although I don't understand why they should start doing that to me out of the blue(Blue lol:D) and without me requesting it.

Also just to mention again it is only happening on two unconnected sites. I can get to their home page but no further. Other adults sites are perfectly ok:D. Unfortunately I don't want to go there, they look so Dodgy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭the watchman

This thread has had over 1200 views and the problem is not sorted. Well, this is a first lol:D.
Incidently I doubt that its a '3' blocking thing as I can view other Adult sites, so that should tell us a little more.

I can't change operating systems, way too technical for me.

Come on guys, lets not have this thing beat us:D. I know Boards can do it;).

If downloading a file, burning a CD and rebooting is too technical for you, I conclude that you're not really trying. You've also been advised to try with a different operator, which doesn't require any specific technical knowledge, and calling your providor, which you don't seem to want to do, so really you need to start helping yourself at this stage.

With respect Mod, how many computer owners would download a file ,burn a cd and re boot their computers?. I would almost guarantee my 5 nearest neighboughs wouldn't know what you are talking, in fact only the other day one neighbour didn't know the difference between a cd and a cdr..
And it would seem that that route is probably more like using a a sledge hammer to crack a nut given all the info I have supplied to date.

As for '3' why would they block 2 sites and not the rest of the adult sites. That would again suggest to me that its most likely not the problem. Further if it means me have to try and understand those people in India again well, quite frankly given the nature of my problem it wouldn't merrit going through that torture again.

I do have another person checking those sites with another computer but they haven't come back to me yet. Therefore Mod again I say with respect that I am trying all reasonable steps in line with my capabilities albiet that I am perhaps leaving the most drastic steps such as changing op systems and the like to a final and last resort.

I do note your comments and hope still springs eternal.

The person is not a mod in this forum, even if they were I dont think you need to refer to them as that.
I do agree however, downloading, burning a CD and booting with that CD is beyound the realms of many people without significent learning/guidance.
However that doesnt preclude you from trying either of the avenues above.

One thing learned in IT support over the years is not to rule out the obvious. There is a chance that you operator has changed something and you need to contact them to verify that this is not the case.
The other thing I have learned is that system restore is an invaluable resource.

You're going to start running out of people willing to help you if you dont attempt any of their suggestions.

im almost certain that its a problem on 3's end, or youve been barred from the websites (possible?)

the thing is, (possibly 3) and other mobile opperators block content to their subscribers based on what a 3rd party lobby group suggests to them. do a google of "Internet Watch Foundation" . The other sites may be working now, but that means nothing.

will you just give 3 a call? seriously, its not hard, and takes no technical know-how. they may be indian, but they are paid to behave in a civil and adult maner.

this will be my last post here and my final suggestion. if you dont follow my advice, then im wasting my personal time here and you're being stubborn.

From a Three rep on their Talk to forum: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056155751 posted 25-01-2011
Thanks for your post. Sites of an adult nature are currently blocked by 3's filtering service called Bluecoat, this is to ensure that children don't access content they shouldn't see and 3's access to sites is also guided by the Internet Watch Foundation. Recently, we launched a process to allow bill pay customers to have this removed from their accounts by calling our customer care team. There is also a project ongoing to deliver this for 3Pay.

Bluecoat don't always get it right and sometimes they block "lifestyle sites" in error - if there is a site you believe we should allow access to we are happy to review it against the guidelines and unblock it where necessary.

The first post mentions a 3 blocker (page?) but you may not see that if content on the blocked site is being called by javascript from an unblocked site.

    I give in.
I called 3 this afternoon. Surprisingly on this ocassion I could understand her reasonably well. Only 3 ocassions where when I didn't undertand the words she was saying, took a bit of time but eventually overcame that problem.

She had me searching all over the place on my computer and ticking boxes here there and everywhere. Strange looking places deep inside that motherboard where no God fearing non tech guy should be going:D. My head was wrecked from it after 45mins. She eventually asked me to test those sites....still the same:confused:.She had asked me serveral times to hold while she got other advice. But she had to stop at that point. I was then told that she would now have to terminate the call while she went and got further assistance. She said it would take a while and that to be assured she would be back within 2 hours. Damn close to that now. Before she left, I asked her "is '3' blocking those sites", she answered that question by saying "thank you for your patience we will contact you within two hours".lol.
    so I await.
In the meantime non tech head wonders ..' i wonder if those settings/changes she did need a computer restart to take effect' so I just restarted.
Look what I found (see attachmant) she had me tinkering with the registry:eek:.
I might be going back on the fags:rolleyes:
    Will keep you posted.
    ************
ok, can't upload, screenshot too big 1.3MBs.
It shows Spybot notices a registry entry has been changed and asks would I allow. Mnnnnn. when in doubt do nothing/ waits for the call.......

    Ok, call came.:)
I metioned the Spybot warnings of registry changes and was told ok allow changes. There were about 6 or 7. (hope they don't come back to haunt me lol).
Then tried the sites again, no luck.
Its now suggested that I try Dongle in different computer and see what happens, that could be embarrassing:D, not really on is it.
or try access the sites through a different Isp ..with same dongle I think she said. I don't really have the fascility to do that either..

So I then asked her, "in her experience if she had 1000rupies what would she bet on that might be the problem, '3'/dongle or something in my computer.
She said "my computer". But of course shes not able to assist in that.Understandable.

NB. bty, thanks for the offers to check the sites :Dbut the sites are ok, were checked by someone in uk.

So now, I just go and get the tool box from the shed. theres a nice lump hammer in there.
