14 and was watching Kill Bill from 07. I don't watch it for the violence but just the story line and how it's played out. <--- Film Buff

Saw all the greats before I was 10, the terminators , predators , Aliens etc etc.

Never got scared, was when my parents wouldn't let me watch them that I'd get scared, kids imagination is far worse then anything hollywood can do. I understood I was watching actors even at that age.

What did scare me was shows like unsolved mysteries , alien abductions and so on cause of the whole 'this really happened in RL' vibe off them.

I mean listen to this feckin music!

Sisko... you're bringing back so many memories of that show. My dad loved it.

You should put a warning on that video for people who are watching it alone in the dark at half 4 in the morning!

I vaguely remember watching the oriingal version of "the fog" when i was a kid between 5 - 8 years old.

    My favourite bit was
when the priest was cut in half by a big seaweed with a broadsword

There was a small cinema close to where I lived when I was growing up, no age restrictions applied... got in to see Robocop when I was 10 and still remember the melty toxic waste bit! The local video shop was the same, my love of "nasties" was well known.

18's movies were my first sex education demo's

Then i had to put them into practice.

My first relationship was a fail when on the first date i opened with

"I'm gonna fcuk you up the ass bitch"

I started watching Love actually and prity women after that.

I am still with the prostitute.

All the time. In my house, the age rating was an advisory rating and nothing more. I know plenty of people whose parents wouldn't let them watch 18's movies when they were 16 though.

Batman came out when I was 8, had a 15 cert. I watched that. Gremlins came out when I was 2 - I think it had an 18 cert originally. I saw it when I was 6 (loved it!)

I remember staying up late and watching C4. Some of the programmes/films they showed back then were practically porn. I used to love that channel.

being the youngets in my house i saw loads of 18 movies. my older brothers were well into video nasties in the 80's. i saw the evil dead when i was 6 - that terrified me for weeks. nightmare on elm st was the worst - i stayed awake all night sitting on the bedroom floor - i was convinced my bed was going to eat me! saw it not so long ago and i cant believe it scared me so much!!

When I was about 9 or 10 I really wanted to watch Robocop. So my mam taped it off the tv one night.

I sat down all excited, ready for the gore everyone in school had been telling me about. Murphy is about to be blown to bits...the tape skips! back the video comes, it's about to get gory again, and it happens again! wtf?

The oul wagon had censored out all the nasty bits. Her own home version of the BBFC.

The Fog was a AA rated film - you wous! ;)

Sadly I was almost old enough to vote by the time home video became the norm, but I saw some X-rated stuff at the flicks and on telly every now and again.

Seamus, Gremlins was a 12 cert dispite all the splatter!

IT was the one that freaked me out the most.

My dad used to confiscate loads of pirate videos in work and then bring them home. they'd nearly all be over 18s with enough smut to keep a 10yr old happy :D

The ones I remember from my preteen days are Terminator, Flashdance, Robocop2 and American Warewolf in London.

EDIT: Gremlins, Critters and IT too

Back then, movies weren't as accesible as they are now. The only movies we watched were those that were rented from "Dial-A-Video". No chance we were getting any over 18's.

And by jaysus, you'd rewind it before it is returned or there would be trouble!

Same thing happened for me when I heard about Gary Glitter ;)

Seriously though. Terminator 1 & 2, Robocop, Predator, Con Air, All the horror movies such as Friday 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, IT, The Shining and many others.

Parents used to let me watch Gremlins up until they stopped being cute, i was always intrigued as to what happened in those cocoons.

Edward Scissorshands freaked me too, the music the darkness of it all, was too much for a little kid.

Apart from that I was aloud watch all the blood and violence once I was over 10 but as my mother used to say 'as long as there are no bed scenes'

Yip, used to watch 18 movies all the time as a kid, back in the 80's the guy in the one video shop in town, would rent me any flick. But my parents used to go mental when they'd find the film case and see it was 18's. I woulda been around 8 at the time watching them, did me no harm.

I remember getting in trouble for watching Critters 2, and Predator 2. Parents weren't happy.

Even though I was allowed watch Predator 1 when it was on UTV, but it was cut to shreds, no cursing, and no Carl Weathers arm getting zapped off, and loads of other great bits cut.

When I was a kid films got an 18 cert (or even banned outright) on even more ludicrous grounds than they are now so yes I did watch 18 films as a kid with the full knowledge and approval of my parents.

Oddly though the TV listings back in those days didnt give age ratings for films. It was generally understood that films scheduled for late night broadcast were not intended for kids but this was only a rough rule-of-thumb and not particularly reliable (contrary to popular misconception the "9pm watershed" doesnt apply in Ireland) meanwhile US cop shows of the era (a staple of early evening schedule on RTE/ITV back then) often featured a lot of gratuitous violence but this was all fine and dandy as long as nobody said any naughty words.

My Dad refuses to watch films on UTV for this very reason. RTE for all their flaws rarely cut films they either show the damn thing in its entirity or dont show it at all.

Does anyone remember the Today tonight (eighties RTE current affairs series big into moral panics) "investigation" into "Video nasties" ? Most of the subject matter would be considered laughably tame these days. Back in the days when there was actually something worth watching on Channel 4 it was a regular target of the Daily Mail's condemnation (probably the best endorsement one can get) unfortunately at the time hardly anyone could get the bloody signal where I lived :(

In the absence of Channel 4, German satellites or a video the closest thing to televisual porn was the weekly subtitled film on RTE2

My older cousins used to babysit me and my brother and watched whatever the hell they wanted. I seen Bloodsport and Robocop, but not horror films, thankfully - I don't think I'd be able to sleep if I did. It was bad enough watching alien abduction films/tv programmes. I used to think I'd find a little green man staring in the window when I went to bed, and I stayed up for ages one night thinking that an airplane was an alien spacecraft coming to get me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

I dunno what rating it was, but I do remember watching The Shining as a young kid and not being able to sleep for weeks.

First argument I ever remember between my parents was 'WHY THE HELL DID U LET HER STAY UP AND WATCH THAT!!' :D

One of my fave films of all time now though, I was a wimpy 7 year old :p
