We are a small county. How many sports journalists would you expect? I mean I am old enough to remember when a 2nd paper tried to start and failed. Monaghan just lost their paper of record. Print media is on the way out, Radio probably not far behind, so its open to anyone to become "media" now and start a rival podcast. I believe there is/was one already - I don't listen to it. So I suppose, bottom line is there is nothing to stop you or anyone else becoming additional media in Cavan.

As for McCabe, he is an employee of Cavan GAA who exist on behalf of the Cavan public. So he would want to cop on and work with the local media whoever they are. Personally, if I see this nonsense continue I will decline to enter Cavan GAA fundraising efforts.

Just wondering, how many clubs stood up at AGMs in the last few years and openly questioned the performance of our underage teams. The primary responsibility surely for holding the county board and their agents to account is surely the clubs who elect them?

It's true Cavan isn't big enough. I remember about 15 years ago they had a few other newspapers to rival the Celt for a while but didn't last long. I think Mickey Graham done an article each week or Stephen King.

Cavan Post it was called. There was another paper around that time too.

I have no interest in becoming "Media" what im saying is it is not ideal that our entire "Media" is the same and their opinion is all that is heard.

I’ve been through this in the past and won’t retread old ground. Clubs will not stand up and question the elite because there will be ramifications for the club. Look through my previous posts if you want to see where I discussed this previously.

As Kieran Callaghan said, the way the CB view it is that you are either on the train with them or you aren’t. There’s no happy medium.

Where’d this game (Sligo challenge as mentioned above) get played and any word how it went?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 538 ✭✭✭mylestheslasher

Word in Sligo is that Sligo won narrowly but no word on the game or where it was played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 538 ✭✭✭mylestheslasher

I'd imagine its the same for journalists, No? But at least journalists have said something, even if the accusation is it was late coming.

It was played in breffni I believe and we were beaten by 2 or 3 points . Heard nothing other than that

Favor Shehu was one of the corner backs. Paddy Meade full back. Ryan Tobin was half back. Ciaran Brady of Corofin was in the middle with Ryan Donahoe. Peter Corrigan started in the half forward line , Tiernan Madden also. Cormac Reilly, Paddy Lynch and Caoimhin McGovern in the full forward line.

I think shekelton was in the full faward line with paddy and cormac and caoimhin came on going by the podcast.

In my opinion, which again I’ll add is conjecture on my part, it only came last year when the CB tried to put the pressure on McCabe and gave the go ahead for the journalists to apply it. There was a decade of inaction before that.

The issue now is that said journalists have been left high and dry because the CB have done a 360 u turn on the individual. He’s now back as manager and he remembers who called him out twelve months ago.

For me, it’s up to the county board to step in and say he needs to at least make some form of effort with them but the man runs the show in there so it doesn’t appear anything will be done.

Of interest, Damien Donohoe has also recently said he is stepping back from being Drumalee delegate because members of the CB have stopped talking to him because he asks questions at meetings.

The questions I saw or heard of him asking were always constructive so it shows just how thin skinned the top table are.

You need to create an atmosphere of openness and transparency and our CB are quite happy to foster the opposite.

Most Country boards are like that. Frank Murphy was involved with Cork for a long time. Another Don Corleone.

We’re not much better in Cavan. All that happens now is the move the seats around. Even when people lose elections on the county board, which is a rarity, they suddenly pop up in another role or on the Ladies committee.

You hear about people being on the managerial circuit. You get plenty of people on the committee circuit too!

In fairness though, there are plenty of roles to be filled, work to be done and not enough volunteers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 572 ✭✭✭Thunderbirds

You've argued against yourself there. Anyone is entitled to any role and can seek election at club or county level so the argument does not stack up. As a club volunteer it's getting harder and harder every year to fill roles on committee, coaching and senior management teams. I would not take on a role at county level for love nor money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,657 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I’m not arguing with anyone. Yes people are entitled to run but, as you said yourself, clubs are struggling to fill roles so at CB level the people in positions are generally left and they move the seats around every few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 572 ✭✭✭Thunderbirds

Think the moving seats around comment harsh. People just don't want to fill the positions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,657 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Are people encouraged to go forward for positions? I don’t think they are. Hence my comment re moving the chairs around.

Those at the top have power and are quite happy to hold it.

The first round Sigerson panels have been released today. Apart from TUD there seems to be low representation. Just a sprinkling here and there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭rrs

January one of the busiest months for some players. Some players with All Ireland Club semi finals and finals. Sigerson and National league. The GPA talk about player burn out ,but Sigerson has a backdoor system when it use to be knockout.

But if they were not happy to hold the power the roles would not be filled as nobody else wants them as you have said so its those people who are giving up there time to keep things going.

Balls.ie rank Cavan 15th in their power rankings.

    15. Cavan

Cavan were within one score of promotion to Division 1 but after that the wheels came off slightly. A poor Ulster performance against Tyrone before they shipped heavy defeats to Donegal, Tyrone again and Kerry in Killarney. These defeats were broken up by a really impressive win in Castlebar against Mayo so you don't really know what you will get with Cavan.

New manager Dermot McCabe knows Cavan football better than anybody and will have his eyes on promotion from Division 2 and a couple of championship upsets.

Colm Parkinson remarked a few years back that county boards are now so big and have so much money flowing through them that Croke Park should be appointing a number of professional CEOs, one for each county as an example, to oversee things. I totally agree with that.

It would hopefully bring some impartiality into things. I have absolutely no faith in how full time roles are filled. Appears to be very much who you know, or indeed support, and not what you know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 572 ✭✭✭Thunderbirds

Martin Cahill is employed by Croke Park and the process is ongoing where all employees will be by Croke Park rather than County Boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,657 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Croke Park didn’t select him though and he’s been on the CB years between different roles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭large_palette

Years? He was on the CB since I was a gasan and that's not yesterday. He's on it decades.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

He's on it over 30 years if I can remember correctly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭rrs

He had a County final replay during coving when every other County finished on the day. Money made.

Monaghan missing a lot for the game on Saturday

    https://www.irishnews.com/tags/monaghan-gaa/

manager Gabriel Bannigan has included 18 new players in his panel for the Dr McKenna Cup.

Bannigan is without six experienced campaigners from Ulster champions Scotstown and a dozen injured players including Clontribret’s Killian Lavelle who has been ruled out of the McKenna Cup and the National League.

So the Monaghan boss has cast his net wide and trawled the county for fresh talent and many of the new recruits will hope to see action on Saturday when the Farneymen begin their season against Cavan at Kingspan Breffni (6pm).

“I brought a lot of new players into the panel at the start of last season,” said Monaghan manager Bannigan who guided his county back to Division One last year, his first season in charge.

“I didn’t think I’d be bringing as many in this year but I’ve brought every bit as many in again and the mood music in training has been very good.

“We’ve played a couple of challenge games and we’ve had reasonably good performances and then we have the two McKenna Cup games against Cavan and Fermanagh.

“I’m really looking forward to pitching them in and seeing how they get on and there will be plenty of new faces in there.”

Bannigan has also included James Slevin in his squad. The Latton midfielder could see some McKenna Cup action but fellow rookies Robbie Hanratty (Castleblayney) and Emyvale defender Harvey Colleran won’t feature until the National League.

Also currently injured are experienced duo Ryan Wylie and Ryan McAnespie as well as
