    Hi,
Can anyone help advise me on the best route for me to go, in order to give me the knowledge and skills to set up my own business? Would I need to do a Business degree, or are there shorter FETAC courses that would best equip me? All advice is greatly appreciated! :o

County Enterprise Boards run Start Your Own Business courses, give a good overview of everything.

Here are the details from the Dublin City E.B. website:

As Tangled mentioned the CEB's have some basic courses. But really there is nothing like just starting and learning on your feet.

Read (or Listen to) as many business books as you can, try and find a few mentors who can guide you along the way. Business isn't rocket science and once you have some experts (like accountants and lawyers) as advisers you'll be fine. Business is 1% about the idea and 99% about just getting out and doing it.

I agree with Ronan, learn on your feet. You'll have a better understanding of things and it'll be alot cheaper. Get down to your local library, tonnes of books related to starting a business and a few motivational ones to get the juices flowing. Im a firm believer in the 6 degrees of separation theory. It crazy since i began to get the ball rolling on starting a business i haven't had to look very far to know someone who had an insight or experience with business. Only today contacted an old school friend who is a lawyer who's more then happy to give assistance.

Dont be afraid of starting and going it alone.

Also +1 on what Ronan said.

You can plan a business to death over time.

Just Nike it (Just Do It) and learn as you go along.

You can plan all you want but you still have to allow for Murphy's Law.

Nothing will go according to plan all the time.

Talk to a good accountant NOW! They don't charge for your initial meeting and mine lasted 3 hours, take lots of notes.

Area Partnerships run good Start Your Own Business courses.

I just attended one today on VAT out in Blanchardstown and it only cost me €10.

    Best of luck.

I would highly recommend the Enterprise Boards' SYOB courses. Even calling into the Enterprise Board for a chat before you progress any further would help

Read read read. Books such as The E-Myth by Michael Gerber will give you good starting ideas and initial inspiration but as Ronan said the best thing to do is to get out there and just do it. You can spend plenty of money on courses and seminars but the best way to learn anything is by doing it. What if you fail? So what at least you can learn from it and not make the same mistakes next time

E-myth is a great book, highly recommend it.

I am currently doing research in the area of the enterprise Ireland incubation centres and from the feedback I have received from people on these courses i would highly recommend you to go and talk to your local centre. They can help with any issues you may have. There are a number of benefits from going this route especially if your not to sure or have not experience in business
