    Hi Guys,

Have been lurking on here for ages and learning loads. I have never been very heavy but have had a pretty bad diet for a few years. I think over Christmas I just copped on and decided to be healthier. I used to eat on a Friday evening a pizza, packet of crisps, box of popcorn and can of coke for example and I realise now that its beyond unhealthy for me!

I have a calorie calculater and food analysis app which has been amazing as I never really had a concept befpre of what was in foods.

So I have drastically reduced the amount of crisps, chocolate and take aways I eat and have gradully been making healthier choices. I am a fussy eater which makes things difficult but I am trying to find healthy things I like. I don't want to fall into the trap of eating loads of high sugar low fat prosucts

I wanted to check - kelkin original meusli is this good or bad? I love it as there are so many different nuts in it and it fills a hole if I have a small bowl in the evening. I hate porridge and dont like eggs so that is not an option for me.

Also surf seeds I have fallen in love with these as they curb my chocolate craving and taste great - but are they?

    Thanks

Don't surf seeds have chocolate mixed in with them?

Fair play to you for cleaning up your diet!

I've never bought or eaten any Kelkin museli. But no more than any food item have you taken a look at the ingredients on the side of the box? Is sugar in one form or another listed in the first 4 ingredients on the box? Do you recognise all the ingredients listed on the box? If there is little sugar in it and you recognise all the ingredients then I reckon you could be eating far worse things.

With regard to the surf seeds, I reckon you could be eating far worse things...

Thanks guys. Ok I found the imngredients list for the kelkin meusli online :

    http://www.kelkin.ie/prod_originalmuesli.html

I didn't think it was too bad as it seemed to have a lot of whole ingredients but I could be wrong!

Gummy Panda yeah the surf seeds have like 10-20% of them coated in chocolate but the rest is all sunflower seeds. I know its still chocolate but I figured its a big improvement on eating a bar of chocolate :)

Are there any other snacks that are good? I don't like salad, love fruit and nuts. Im stuck at a desk all day so to be honest I often eat or graze out of boredom so I am trying to replace bad snacks with good!

have you tried dark chocolate? I started at 70% and worked my way up to 90%. it's not as sugary as regular chocolate and it's hard to eat more than a couple of squares!

apart from that hard boiled eggs are very good or cheese, natural yoghurt, or fruit and nuts as you said.

That's 25.2g of sugar per 100g of kelkin museli. So that translates to 25% of any serving of that museli is sugar - not so sure that I would eat that:( Would you just eat plain oats on their own? There is a recipe for oat pancakes knocking around here somewhere that you could try??

How about carrot or celery sticks, maybe with humus? Or some canned fish? Or beef jerky/biltong?

Well done on changing your diet for the better.
I found surf seeds very expensive - instead, just buy a bag of sunflower seeds and put them in a small plastic container. I mix mine with pumpkin seeds for extra flavour - they're lovely and perfect for snacking.

I think that is sugars found in the fruit and not the sugar you put in coffee etc.

Doubt very much whether your body knows the difference TBH

Thanks everyone I really appreciate the advice. I didnt realise there was so much sugar in the kelkin I will go easy on it!

I am not going to have a brilliant diet over night but I figure if I can make changes I will get somewhere. I used to eat a pack of king / hunky dory crisps once a day now its a 99 calorie bag of treble crunch every second day. I've stopped eating the standard bars of chocolate if I want some I will have one of the tiny kinder ones and im eating a lot more fruit. Its a gradual weaning myself off junk process

I will definately check out the M & S bags. I bought seeds 4 u the other day but hated the taste they were too savoury I prefer the plain stuff. Good idea on the dark chocolate its been ages since I ate any of that stuff I used to love a square of the almond or orange dark one I think it was lindt or that.

as for cheese I love cheese I have a bit of a baby bell and swiss cheese and emmental addiction!

I have to say its an eye opener to see what is in food - not just the calorie side of it (which for some foods has been a shock) but how much sugar can be in something supposedly healthy. I used to be a big emotional / stress eater to - a bad day in work and I'd find I'd eaten a twix and not realised! Now I am actually stopping myself and saying do you really want to eat that?

Ive always been a size 8- 10 but I know what I was eating was not good for me and while it didnt show on my weight much as I do a good bit of excercise it was more my health and things like cellulite that showed the effects! I am hoping that by eating healthy and continuing to excercise I will see an improvement in my body tone and shape.
