we all hear and see evidence of freshly calved dairy heifers making anything from 1500 - 2000 + but if someone was just looking for a handfull of quality cows around the seven or eight year old mark , what kind of money would you pay , im not talking about problem cows with only three teats or high cell count , perfectly sound cows who just happen to have five or six lactations under thier belts

we let cows like these go for around 900euro every year. we cull cause the ebi is under 50 or classify under vg as a fifth lact cow

I'd say not many people would be getting rid of perfectly sound milking cows with another lactation or two left in them but you might be lucky

Fifth lactation + cow is my profit cow, more yield and she has long covered her rearing costs. If she has low EBI yet is a healthy fifth calver, what does that say about EBI or classification. May be different for you chasing index for bull contracts etc

2nd to 6th lact cows producing most milk here- lost 40% of herd 3-4years ago so its only been since last year that we were able to cull. the last few weeks has seen some amount of rows over which which cows to sell-dad wants to get rid of 30 heifers and only 10cows where as i have no room for sentiment- i want to keep the best herd possible- keep all heifers over 140ebi and replace older cows-less treath of superlevy this way for next year and working towards 2015

would imagine a good 5th 6th lact cows would be €1200 -1300. with hfs at €1700
we would usually knock off €50 a lact for any cows over 3rd lact.
have found a big shift in the last 2-3yrs away from hfs and more people looking for 2nds and 3rds, still young cows, more milk and more settled.

any one heard of fresh milking cow/hf prices.

After 5th lactation the rule of tumb i use is €1/kg plus €300 per lactation (1 or 2) that you may get from her, so if she calved late, anyway under condition or has dodgy feet (not lame) equals 1 lactation, but if calved early good condition and good on the feet equals 2 lactations, (dosn't always follow through sometimes the lame, under conditioned ones are the first ones back in calf).

so 600kg cow €900/€1200 would be a fair price.

sorry , not the brightest , are you saying a 5th calver with poor feet and in poor condition is worth around 900 and a 5th lactation animal in good nick is worth 1200 ?

That's what i'm saying €1/kg = cull cow value + 1 lactation profit €800 less margin €500= €300. when i talk about condition i speak of condition score and dodgy feet it's locomotion but then again i don't generally buy an other mans Cull cows.
