Tony over at http://www.wheelspin.ie runs things - although if you've registered and can post on the forum, that's about all that's currently involved in joining as such. I'll flag this post in the forum and see if Tony bites - he's offline currently.

Thanks for the heads up Alastair.

    Hi Foxcoverteddy,

I've now registered you and apologies about that. We have been inundated with spam registrations this year and I do remember your username from going through the list but wasn't sure if it was a legitimate user or not.

It's great to have you on board and welcome :)

If anyone else is in a similar position please contact me (directions on how to do this are in the registration section of the forum homepage which can be viewed without being a member / logged in)

    Many thanks,

    Tony.

Many thanks, it would be nice to have a truly Irish Club for Volvo's though most of the older model's no doubt came via the UK, seems Volvo were late in coming to Ireland, our nearest dealer is Carlow which suddenly came nearer with the motorway, once again many thanks

Volvo cars came to Ireland in the late 60's afaik. It's just that, with the exception of the 300 Series (which was really a Daf), the brand never sold in huge volume here.

Other contributing factors like the scrappage scheme of the 1990's can't have helped survival rates of original Irish examples either.

    + 1000

So many good cars in need of a couple of hundred quid of repairs went to the scrapyard during these scrappage schemes ... it seems that in 15 - 20 years there will be very few Irish original classics to buy.

Thanks for the kind words Foxcoverteddy. We have a fairly good mix of cars on board - quite a few of the older ones are ex-U.K. but not all. A man who attended one of our meets had an original Irish 244 Jubilee, 'OZA' registered, which once belonged to the Swedish Ambassador.

Now the challenge is to get one of those 'D-1' ex Lord Mayor Volvos on board too :p

From looking at your post on IVC you're certainly a man who understates his strong Volvo pedigree!

    All the best,

    Tony.

    Hi everyone,

Just a little word regarding the site. It's been on a bit of a wobble since yesterday, which has gotten progressively worse ('Internet explorer can not display the web page')

Unfortunately the hosts of the site kick back and put their feet up for the weekend, which isn't a great help.

I've emailed them so hopefully either they'll have a solution, or it'll sort itself out in the meantime.

    Regards,

    Tony.

Okay, back online at last :)

Despite every possibility from a terrorist threat to uber-spammers being considered, the reason the site went offline for a few days was far less dramatic.

I decided to cull some of my '.ie' renewals, and unfortunately there was a slight mix up. One of the two addresses for the forum got terminated by mistake (and a domain I didn't want got renewed!) hence the forum wasn't available.

Apologies for the inconvenience, and thanks to anyone who was trying to access the forums for your patience.

    Regards,

    Tony.

    Hey Tony,
Just trying to register with IVC there yesterday. Do you reckon my account will be active soon? After years in aged Audi's, I have moved to a swedish lump of 850. I resisted for years! We have had one in the family since the early 70's - earliest I remember is a mustard coloured 245 wagon!

    cheers

    Hi Scamp, welcome aboard :)

I found you on the reg. list and activated your account so all should be well now :)

Speaking of mustard coloured 245's, at least one member has one ... a '77 I think. I have to stop myself from adding more cars to my personal 'collection' every time they come up cheap on DoneDeal, which is far too often.

Hope you enjoy the forums, and be sure to introduce yourself ;)

    Regards,

    Tony.

    Great stuff!
Thanks. I'll pop over there and get myself setup. Would love to have a look at one of those mustard mobiles for the nostalgia! Have some old pics when I was a nipper of the 245 from the 70's i must dig out and put up.

my folks owned the 1st Volvo 145 DL in Ireland back in the early 70s, I remember it well.... seemed like a monster back then! Have a v70 xc now.... still a monster! ;)

I had a mustard 240 saloon, with those fantastic bumpers, ideal for pushing cars, knocking down walls and best of all when someone run into the back of
you. I always felt somewhat smug looking at the battered front of someone elses car, mines alright jump in and drive off. Typical London attitude.
CYK 871 V named Ester for some obscure reason, was not designed for Dalmations with black upholstery, even with plastic made to fit covers there was always white hairs.
It was always a pleasure to drive, naturally being a V olvo

It would seem we have dispersed to multi make clubs, unless anyone knows different. I went to the UK VOC but to be honest it is a bit highbrow for my 65 122s, not actually interested in the later models, and some of the mixed makes really have not anything on my old Volvo.
Went to a show in Dungarvan durin g the summer and there stood three Volvo's not pristine but who cares a Volvo is a Volvo.
One of my problems is some of the stupid remarks on Boards, it is a real turnoff, we had well stil;l have a Kilkenny thing and some of the people must live in a different world.
Anyone been to Mondello supercar thing, recommend it, ther Boxster was fantastic especially coming up the straight with my foot flat on the floor.
Happy New Year and hope someone somewhere replies. Foxy

    Howya Fox
I'll reply to ya. Unfortunately enthusiasm for older cars has waned in this country. older cars are being forced off the roads and we are all encouraged to drive Hyundais and Kia's . These so called cars are just white goods. You are encouraged to buy a new car every year to boost the flagging Irish market.

There is only a small minority of folk who choose to drive an older vehicle. These hardcore enthusiasts regularly have to run the gauntlet of sneers and ridicule from the 132 Santa Fe and those God awful Quasquai brigade.

In 30 years time will we be saying ohh look a Hyundai iX35 .. Damn sure we wont.

Which moves me on to the IVC. Tony put his head on the parapet and started a great forum. Unfortunately its a damn near impossible task to get a car specific forum to run in this country. There were a few really good meets and always a bit of craic but then you will always get a g*b****e or two who just go and cause upset and generally put people off - When a club is in its infancy this has a huge detrimental effect. Different if there is a lot of members where one or two d**kheads dont make a lot of difference. Tony put his heart and soul into establishing a car specific forum but unfortunately even he has an upper limit - I would have gave up a long time before him but he kept plugging away - in the end he just had to put the fiddle in the bag for the party was over. I feel a bit of guilt as we all should have put more in and not have him do it all, but whats done is done and theres no changing that !

I have now moved to the dark-side ! I cycle so slap me up the face with a wet fish.. If you see a cyclist just think That could be Vanhire

Happy New Year to all the ex-IVC heads and all Classic Car owners .. Dont let the barstewards drag you down !

Thanks for the reply, Happy New Year to you and yours and all ex-members, yes Tony, you did a great job.
I agree it is very difficult to get off the ground, there are so many who post rubbish, I am sure deliberately, never understand why.
The Amazon pops out of the garage from time to time, so keep an eye out for 65KK510 between Kilkenny and Dungarvan.
Take care everyone, good luck. Foxy

I offered to host a replacement for the old forum indefinitely, didn't hear anything back. Ditto Octane.ie, although that was eventually replaced by Backroads.ie, via something else. The offer stands, for this and any other motoring forum. I'm sick to the eye teeth of reading "motorists" post the same old twaddle over and over again, like broken records. I like talking to drivers and enthusiasts, motorists are bores.

Hi folks, at least you speak your minds, I wasn't aware of a problem, but having said that I did not attend anything.
This is a problem with the local car club, they wanted to go out every sunday, to be honest yes I like classic cars, read the automobile, but I find it boring to stand and look at car after car, week after week.
Weekends are special for the family, there lies the problem.
I was a member of the VOC in the UK, somehow despite running the Thames Valley section I appeared not to speak the same language as the top people.
I had contacts with V44 the Dutch Volvo club and in fact had visitors who stayed over, also an Australian Volvo club, who also came and visited, but apparently I was not in favour.
Perhaps much is my fault, though I would have enjoyed belonging.
Having had Volvo's since 1964 my mechanical knowledge is deplorable other than the usual bits.
If there is any thought of resurrecting Volvo in Ireland count me in please.
    Much appreciated Foxy
