Dell Laptop Died

    Hi,
I have a real nice Dell laptop, its about 5/6 years old and was running Xp. One day about 6 months ago it died, wouldnt boot up properly (blank black screen)... I took it to a repair place and they took a 5 minute look and said it had some crazy virus. They said due to its age and value it wasnt worth looking at from a cost perspective. They sold me a sata case so i could remove the HD and try and retrieve pictures etc. I managed to get some files back but the rest just looks like corrupted gobbildy gook..
I still have a use for the laptop if i could get it up and running on the cheap. Could fixing it be as simple as installing a new sata hd and reinstalling windows?

You wouldn't need to get a new hard drive straight away. Try re-installing windows on the current hard drive first.
Do you know how they determined it was a virus? Did you notice any problems prior to it not booting up? Its quite possible the problem could be hardware related but I would certainly try re-installing windows first.

not sure how they determined it tbh I didnt bother to update/re-subscribe my anti-virus for some time.. might explain it. Nope, it was going like a clock up to that. I have formatted the HD and reinstalled it, i am just waiting on Dell to send me out my OS disks, should have them next and see how i go then, cheers
