I know there already are similiar threads on here but I couldn't find what I was looking for.

Basically a friend has a Firebird Oil boiler with an RDB 2.2 burner. Lately it's locking out intermittantly (needs to be reset with the red button). I've replaced the solenoid coil, photocell and even the control box. But problems still occur, works fine some nights, then not so other nights.

Just wondering should I try replacing the valve/armature that moves when the coil is energised? Or possibly oil pump failure? The reason I'm doing the work is to keep costs down to a minimum.

You could try the solenoid itself . If you want to check the oil pump turn on the burner with it out in the open and see does it pump the oil, be ready to turn of quickly . you might also have dirty filters on the oil pump and oil tank as you have replaced so many things . Remember replacing an oil is not cheap

If there is no sign of the photo cell sooting up i would go for the capacitor.

Some other things to consider - replace the nozzle if not already done, they wear over time and do not atomise the oil properly, which makes it harder to ignite. Nozzles should be replaced once a year.

Check the condition and adjustment of the electrodes, their location relative to the nozzle and the gap between them are critical to getting reliable ignition when the burner starts. The manual should provide guidance.

i would guess billy is right, seen it many times starts ok nine out of ten times then just fails.

    pete is right on also.
