I am lying here in desperate pain down my right side which has been getting progressively worse. Do I need a referral letter if I were to go to a&e by ambulance as there is no one here to bring me. Thanks.

No but without a GP letter the charge is €120 to attend AE.
Have you tried the local GP out of hours service. Most have nurse or Doctor advice available.

I know this is over a week old, but that fee - any fee - just to attend an A&E is outrageous beyond belief. Up here it's nothing - and rightly so.

    Words fail me.

Also, Prescription charges have recently being abolished in the North, we brought them back for people with Medical cards here!!!

The fee is meant to deter people from using A&E instead of their GP, however the fee doesn't apply if you are admitted as an inpatient or have a GP referral letter. I just want to clarify that I don't agree with the fee, just explaining it as it was explained to me

Sorry to just be clear that the fee is not to deter people its to reduce costs on the HSE. You are correct that if you are admitted you dont get charged €120 but you have to pay €75 a night inpatient fee.

I was in for 5 nights in the summer total cost €375 :mad::mad:

(also i was admitted because of a fault with my insulin pump, why didnt the manufactures have to pay!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:)

I was just repeating what we were told in a lecture on the HSE set up last year in college, saying that I'm not entirely sure how much the lecturer knew because she kept contradicting herself

If A&E was free, why would I ever go to my GP for treatment when it costs me €50? When GPs are free, then a fee could be dropped for A&E but before then it'd be madness.

Christ I used to live with nurses who told me to use the local hospital's A&E dept instead of getting a GP when I moved to Cork first because it'd be closer (exact phrasing: "Why would you need a GP? The A&E department is just across the road). This was before they hiked up the A&E fees obviously.
