The Mick Lally Memorial/Dublin Wheelers GP races take place on Saturday 5th March 2011.

There will be three separate races this year.

The circuit for the race will be Summerhill Road - Culmullen - Trim Road - Dorey's Forge. http://maps.google.ie/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=209934228330409222985.00049bc6054a7e325ba36&z=12

The A1/A2 race will cover 4 laps of this circuit. (88km) This will be run on a handicap basis.

The A3 race will cover 3 laps. (66km)

The A4 race will cover 2 laps. (44km)

Sign on from 9.15 - 10am at the Summerhill Community Centre, Summerhill, Co Meath.

    First race off at 10.30am.

There will be 1 Day licences available to purchase at sign on.
These will cost €20 for non Cycling Ireland members and €10 for Cycling Ireland members who do not have a Full Competition racing licence.
This is in addition to the event entry fee.

The 1 Day licence money is collected by race organisers on behalf of Cycling Ireland and the full amount has to be forwarded to CI within a set period of time. This does not form part of the race budget.

Unfortunately CI have disallowed IVCA racing licences and therefore we cannot accept same.
IVCA members who wish to ride will have to take out a 1 Day licence.

Early season racing in Ireland generally involves large bunches. Riders are usually a bit fresh/frisky after a long Winter of training and living indoors on a turbo. The peloton can be a scary place. If you are nervous about brake levers digging into your maximus gluteus or shoulders rubbing shoulders or you do not have much experience of riding fast in bunches of cyclists then please be warned.

    Thank you.

    (Mostly from http://www.dublinwheelers.com/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=256&rowstart=0)

Anyone else heading along to this? I know there was a wee boards.ie crew at it last year.

Yep. After getting my arse handed to me on Sunday in s/s, I want to see how badly I do in an open race. :D

Did this last year. It's a good one to start with, certainly a bit easier than the Cyleways Cup the next day. Separate A3 and A4 races this year mean the bunches won't be quite so enormous. Finish at the top of Dorey's Forge means it probably won't be a bunch sprint.

I'll be riding out to it through Ballymun at 8, anyone doing similar?

Was this not run over the Green Sheds last year? With the finish on the Dunboyne road? I might be thinking of another race...

I'll be coming from Kilmainham, wouldn't mind a bit of company on the roll out if you want to meet somewhere.

Might journey over for this one. First open race. The good bike will be staying indoors though.

HOw much is entry fee if I have the full licence? A tenner?

What sort of pace do the A4's go at, this one is only a mile from my front door so it would be an ideal first race for me.

It depends. 40kph... ish... Maybe a little less because it's early in the season. But I raced last week on what is usually a fast circuit and it was quite slow because it was so windy.

I'll add the usual caveat that if you've haven't raced before, don't be put off by speeds. It's much easier to do that kind of pace in a big bunch than it is on your own or in a small group.

Am heading up to this one, I have heard of Dorey's forge before but never ridden it . Would it be a tough circuit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭victorcarrera

    I think A4 consider 3 laps tough.
    A3 are cool about it.
The A1 rider who was 2nd last weekend sprinted up it in the big ring.

Dorey's forge is a kicker but it's nothing crazy.

Does anyone know at what intervals the races go at? For example I see the first is off at 10.30 and if there are 3 seperate races I'm just curious. I want to run the A4 race but I don;t want to show up at 9 or 10 and be sitting around until 1 or 2 or something you know?

Probably 5mins between each race start

He did say he should have been in the small ring however.

Some bloke from Cycleways won A3 with Morty from Epic second. No idea of the other races. A break got away on the second lap of A3 and the bunch didn't bother chasing and they stayed away. The break was only 200m down the road at the end so could have been caught if anyone bothered.

well thats not quite the real story tbh. The break had 1min on the turn into the finish and when they turned left at grange cross they eased up for the sprint.thats why there was only 10 secs at the finish....

I know yea, I was just surprised how close they were at the end. I happily contributed no work to chasing it down and was glad to see them stay away.

    My report.
... I got dropped quite early so TT'd to the half point of the A4 race, I was aware I wouldn't last very long.
    That's my report
LDB took 1st Lady and finished at the top of the main bunch Top 20.
    morana placed in A3 (3rd?)
aidanoffbeat finished 7th on the A3

Here are some vids. I only got the A4 and A3 Finish.

First A4 race today. It was fine. In all honesty it could have been a lap longer to make it harder and thin it out more, but thats just me.

Still a lot to learn about holding position. Able to stay at the front when the road dragged up but struggled to keep position on the faster parts when the bigger lads rolled through. Thats probably still a lack of nerve(and maybe power for such a lean guy;)) at those speeds. Finished in the bunch, no way to move up really when 60-70 cyclists are spread across the road like that!

Well done to the horse that goes by the name of Dan from Orwell who won the race. Some power! And well done to to Mrs. Raam who looked good in the bunch and nearly put me in the ditch as I was moving up towards the end.:)

Spun out to this this morning. Went in the A1/2 race. Pace was pretty high with a move sticking after about 20 minutes, a few chases went after them for about a lap but once things got going in these one of the group would try to attack out of the group ruining any rhythem. I was in a chase group that had almost bridged to another chase group and the leaders at the Forge but my legs just packed trying to carry too big a gear up the forge and was spat out completely. Made another chase group with a couple of other riders and had the main group on the horrizon but got realed back in after a half a lap. Just spun along with this group of a about 20 riders to the finish. Tim O'Regan from Dectek won with a great solo brake of about half a lap.

Spun out to this this morning.

My race report, a little late due to the demands of 25 Cub scouts (I'm now completely shattered.) Spun out with amjon, it was nice to have the company. Took a tumble on the way - encountered some gravel taking a corner and hit the deck. Fazed me a little, but sure it happens.
Went off with the A4 group, and having done too much last week, and with the fall fresh in my mind, I stayed back in the bunch for most of it. Tried to keep near the front, but I definitely didn't do my share of work. Made a couple of attacks coming down the home stretch, but similar to amjon, went up the finishing climb in too big a gear.

Happy enough with my race, could've done better. I'd like to think the fall didn't hamper me physically, but my knees are killing me this morning, and my right-hand side is slightly battered and stiff. But I'm already looking forward to the next race! :) Congrats to all those who won and/or did well!

As I was outside the top 6 it doesn't make any difference to me but were points awarded to the first 6 or 3 in the A4 race? The Cycling Ireland guidelines suggest that points are allocated 3-2-1 only in races under 50km.

That's how you should race, may any work you do count and have a few goes at winning
