    Hi,

I was thinking of booking boxing tickets for the London Olympics as a pressie for my husbands fortieth next year . Only problem is you have to submit a request before mid-April as to what session you want to go to and I haven't a clue what the best one to book would be. Can anyone advise me on what the best weight and round of the competition would be to maximise the chances of seeing an Irish person get a medal? The list is here: http://media.ticketmaster.com/en-gb/img/sys/tournament/london2012/oly-boxing.pdf

    Thanks a million

Very difficult question to answer. The fact that no boxers have yet qualified is the reason. When we get a list of the Irish who qualify, then we can make a call. Be patient I'd say. But, no matter what, it will be well worth it. Great value for money, and top notch amateur boxing.

The Olympics are so tough and competitive that any round is a potential banana skin for any fighter.

Just so we're clear? As far as I know, no boxers have secured their place for London, have they?
Barnes winning the euro gold, that wasn't a qualifier was it? Maybe?

Correct no one has qualified yet. As far as I'm aware the European Championships in June don't even act as a qualifier this time, which is a great shame really seeing as they're going to be in Ireland. The World Championships in September is the first chance to qualify and there's a European qualifier in April of 2012 which is the only other chance.

Top 8 in World Championships reach the Olympics, the amount of Europeans qualified from the World Championships(and WSB) will dictate how many places are available in the European qualifiers. The World Series of Boxing will allow 5 boxers to qualify for the Olympics(this is actually the first chance to qualify and it''s in May), however no Irish boxers are likely to qualify this way, although Nevin has a very small chance.

Well you have from March 15th this year until April 20something to submit your application. You have to commit to pay for the tickets with your application. If you get allocated any tickets they will take your money by June. So you can't wait until you know who's going to be in what session Im afraid. I think it's really stupid. Same for things like gymnastics. It's split into three qualification sessions and the drawing of lots for each session wont happen until much later. How then do the fans/families of the gymnasts in session 1 get tickets? they can't unless they book all 3 sessions. Really bad planning and really sly splitting it into three sessions. It's gonna cost a lot.. hopefully it will be worth it though...

Ya I know, its a pain in the neck cos as you said, you have to pay for the tickets by this June. Think I'll just book one session and hope for the best, thats why any advice on even what weight groupings to book for would be good! If theres no Irish people in that session, maybe you can sell them on again and go shopping instead :)

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Katie Taylors last world title mean she's pretty much guaranteed in London 2012

Not sure as regards the women. Would need clarification on that. WC 2010, still two years out, so I would think a qualifier is in order.

A quick email to events@aiba.org should clear it up

Well here's what I would do if I were you. this is the boxing schedule for the Olympics.

    http://media.ticketmaster.com/en-gb/img/sys/tournament/london2012/oly-boxing.pdf

Drop an email to the Irish Boxing association or give them a ring and explain your dilhemma and ask them which qualification rounds the Irish are likely to be in. then go for those tickets. There will be lots of people with the same dilhemma as you so Im sure tickets will be going up for sale or swap after the proper line up is announced. Hope you get what you want. Im all excited for the gymnastics... tickets on sale next week

I can confidently say that ALL divivions will throw up great fighters and hopefully great fights. The talent and depth is so good that all weighst are really well represented. I really couldn't even pick a division. They are all full of talent, world class talent.

Oh, the fact that the 54 kg and 57 kg divisons are now merged to give us the 56 kg divison may
be the one that supplies the most varied talent. Some other merges too, but this one sticks out for me.

What about the women Billy? Is Katie Taylor definitely assured a place and what do you think of her chances of gold ?

    Who's Billy?

Anyway, as far as I know, no women are yet assured a place in London.

There will be only three weights for the Women. Katie will be in the 60 Kg category

48 to 51 kilograms, or about 106 to 112 pounds), lightweight (56 to 60 kilograms, or about 123 to 132 pounds), or middleweight (69 to 75 kilograms, or about 152 to 165 pounds).

Taylor I would say is a warm favourite. Far from a certainty.

Queen Underwood will be a very dangerous opponent if she enters

Yes, Sofya Ochigava is the girl. Beat Taylor 8-1 last year; though these scores and fights in these sort of tournaments must be taken with caution.

The Russian's did not enter the girl in last year's WC tournament.

Taylor is in action on Sunday vs. the Chinese girl she beat in the WC
final last September. Ireland (men) meet China on Sunday evening in Wexford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭mjon3105

    Hi Bren,

Yes, Sofya Ochigava will be a major threat BUT she is still nowhere near recovered from last summer's bad injury sustained in Ukraine. She just resumed light training in February and has not yet taken part in any actual bouts. She is the Russian team captain though and they are anxious that she should be fit for London 2012.

By the way there is an "official" Olympic Games "test" event taking place in Excel Centre, London (where the Olympic boxing takes places) between 24/27 November 2011 and several Irish fighters are expected to take part though still to be confirmed.

There is also a 'real possibility' that Katie Taylor will be a last minute surprise addition to tomorrow's Dolphil Promotions night at Citywest which is being televised by RTE. Of course the Casey-Rigondeaux fight is the main event. But Dolphil are confident that Taylor will be on the bill for which most seats are already 'sold out'.

ps: Later Update: I understand that Taylor's opponent will most likely be Sweden's 33yrs old Helena Falk, a European bronze medallist whom I saw defeat Britain's Amanda Coulson in Cardiff last Autumn and was a winner against Britain's useful Leah Flintham at the Haringey Box Cup tournament where Taylor took the 60kg title and boxer of the tournament. I understand that the propomoters invited a rematch with Bulgaria's Denitza Eliseeeva but that that invitation was declined by the Bulgarians (probably their boxing authority). Falk is a good all rounder but not in Taylor's class if the latter is anywhere near top form though with three possible fights against Cheng Dong in next 7 days she may not be entitrely go all out. Dong as we know was the runner up to Taylor at the last two world championships and will be more than anxious to gain revenge on Irish soil...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭mjon3105

Yes, she (Taylor) is due to meet Cheng Dong in a repeat of the World title fight, this time at the Brandon House Hotel in New Ross, Wexford on Sunday. Other Irish women fighting on that bill will be the young Mayo girl, Katie Rowland from Geesala BC, a 'star of the future' and Drimnagh's Sinead Kavanagh.

iaba.ie has full details of the Irish teams for New Ross and Dungarvan events.

Taylor and Dong may meet again on Wednesday when Ireland takes on China again in Dungarvan Sports centre in West Waterford. Cavan's Ceire Smith joins Taylor and Kavanagh on the Irish women's team that night.

There is also a third Ireland v China fight evening on Friday next at the National Stadium though the Irish squad for that session has still to be finalised. The Chinese though have again nominated Cheng Dong in the 60 kg women's event...... Mike

    Well Bren,

Ochigava is ready to return to the ring this week in Czechoslovakia according to this report from AIBA:

    "
Russia's two-time World Champion and three-time European Champion Sofya Ochigava will return to the ring at the traditional Grand Prix which will be held in Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic from March 22.

The 24-year-old Ochigava is titleholder at the tournament after she eliminated Ireland's No.1 Katie Taylor in the semifinal and triumphed over World Championships silver medalist Cheng Dong of China in the final of the last edition. The Irish superstar won't be participating this year, which makes AIBA World Championships bronze medalist Karolina Graczyk of Poland Ochigava's biggest rival in Usti nad Labem.

A total of 18 nations have entered the Grand Prix: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Morocco, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and Uzbekistan. The final entry list shows 33 women's boxers in the three Olympic weight categories and 72 male boxers in eight weight categories."

Of course neither Katie Taylor nor Cheng Dong will be competing there due to the series of Ireland v China matches this week.It will be interesting to see how well she has recovered from that long lay off though my contacts in Moscow tell me she has been fighting soem of the Russian men for practice over the past few weeks. She would normally beat Poland's Gracyz quite easily so will be interesting to see what happens when/if they meet. I remain confident though that last year was a one off and that on neutral ground in London, Taylor would win any re-match....

Mike, we must keep an eye out on that result. No doubt you will
have the lowdown. I still would be concerned with Queen Underwood
for next year, and who knows what talent will emerge in the next 15 months.

Sure Bren - will bring you the results of Ochigava as and when they reach me .....

Here meantime is an interesting article courtesy of "Girlboxing" concerning Queen Underwood. She won the U.S Box Off on Sunday night against Caroline Barry 8-5 and so will be the U.S representative at next week's Pan-American Games....

Whilst I have the utmost respect for Underwood, my own view is that the real threat to Taylor at London 2012 (assuming she gets there!) will be Ochigava. I know that Underwood put in a brilliant last couple of rounds in Barbados but I think this was a "one off". Nothing I have seen before or since convinces me that she is better than ... or as good as .....Ochigava.

You are right though and there will be other threats too emerging in the months ahead. I for one would not be at all surprised to see Turkey's Gulsum Tatar in the medal hunt. She has twice defeated Taylor in previous years and is the current World Champion at the next weight up. She too will be a threat. And so will Britain's Natasha Jonas, who is getting better all the time.

I agree with your previous warnings too .... anyone in Ireland (or elsewhere) who believes that Taylor has only to turn up in London to collect the gold is living in 'cloud cuckoo-land'. And doing a great disservice to Taylor. Luckily she and her Management team are well aware of the threats and where they are coming from. They are exceptionally well organised, even more so after the Barbados scare ,though they too recognise that there is still time for a completely unknown to arrive on the scene.

It will be interesting though to see how Ochigave gets on in Czech Republic.... Watch this space.... and now here is the link to the "Girlboxing" article on Queen Underwood's preparations.....

    Katie Taylor
And the Bray woman didn't left her Waterford fans down with her second victory inside a week - and her fifth win overall - against Dong. Taylor took a relatively tame first round 1-0, but then streaked
ahead courtesy of some rapid-fire combinations to add four points to her total in the second. It was 7-0 at the end of the third and the Bray woman rifled home some stunning shots in the fourth to post a shut-out 11-0 win."

    Thanks Mike,

another great win for the tram and Katie. 11-0. Wow, big and comprehensive score. I would love to have seen if the score reflected the actual bout. These scores can be very deceiving. It seems that KATIE RIGHT NOW IS WELL AHEAD OF THE SO CALLED SECOND BEST FEMALE IN THE WORLD AT LW

    Sorry for the caps.

A well deserved break she should get now. Three fights in 5 days.

I'm very disappointed that RTE do not show at least a "highlights" programme as part of one of their many sports shows when Ireland's excellent boxers take on the world's no 1 or no 2 boxing nation.... when you see how much they spend on events like scotland v italy rugby at murrayfield that almost no one in Ireland is interested in and has no bearing on the title one wonders why they cant find the modest sums to send a cameraman or two to New Ross or Dungarvan...even if they cant afford to send a commentator too . Will be really bad if they dont cover Friday's third international between the two countries at National Stadium where you can again see Katie Taylor for her 4th fight in less than a week against the Chinese, most probably Cheng Dong again.

Sofya Ochigava is due to make her come back later this afternoon in Czech Republic against a much lower ranked Chinese than Dong. I'll let you know the result later tonight if I get it.....

    Bren:

Sofya Ochigava won this evening's fight 7-0 against the Chinese fighter
JIANXIA MA. The latter was bronze medallist at the World Championships 2010 in Barbados at the 64kg weight so is moving down a weight with the London Olympics in mind. There is no available report as yet but from the scoreline and who her opponent was, one can deduce that Ochigava is almost back to her best .... only time will tell....

In the other quarter finals tonight Poland's Karolina Graczyk was 2-2 as the final bell tolled ,against Lucie Bertaud of France but won 6-4 on countback. Norway's Ingrid Egner recd a walk over from Hungary's Noicolette Papp, who withdrew to an injury recd yesterday. A Czech Republic boxer, hitherto unknown Martina Schmoranzova is through to the semi finals also having defeated Annunziata Patti of Italy.

One must therefore expect Ochigava to retain her title at that tournament....

In today's semi finals in Czech Republic results were (in 60kg):

Sofya Ochigava defeated Karolina Graczyk 6-0
Ingrid Egner (Norway) defeated Martina Schmorazova (Cz Rep) 4-2

Would be a big surprise if Ingrid Egner were to defeat Ochigava in tomorrow's final. Egner is a tough, brave fighter but not in same class as either Taylor or Ochigava.

Update from National Stadium on tonight's Ireland v China contest:

" China gained some small measure of revenge for their comprehensive defeats by Ireland in both New Ross (9-3) and Dungarvan (9-3) when they won tonight’s final international between the sides at Dublin’s National Stadium by 6-4.

Ireland were without World Champion Katie Taylor who had to withdraw due to an infected tooth – her replacement, Corinthians Kelly Harrington put up a fine display against World No 2 Cheng Dong before eventually going down to the two time World Silver medallist.

Tonight’s Irish winners were Ryan Lindberg, Eric Donovan, Ken Egan and Conrad Cummings. Despite the 6-4 defeat tonight Ireland won the series 22-12 on aggregate – an excellent achievement against one of the World’s top two amateur boxing nations.

Kenny Egan made a welcome return to the National Stadium as he recorded a 13-9 win over Fanlong Meng in the light-heavyweight category . You will recall last month he surrendered his Irish Elite title to Moate’s Joe Ward

"I knew I had to go for it in the last round, but I'm pretty happy with the way I pulled things out, " he said after tonight’s contest.

"I had two demons to deal with here - my loss to Joe Ward in the final of the championships last month and my loss in the Olympic final the last time I met a Chinese fighter."

Eric Donovan, who boxes out of the St Michael’s Club in Athy , and a bronze medal winner at the 2010 European Championships, recorded the most impressive of Ireland’s four wins tonight - a 14-6 victory over Quiang Lio. His St Michael's Athy team-mate Roy Sheehan lost out to Qiong Maimaitituersun.

"I won all three rounds, and I certainly felt like I had him under control. I think I boxed pretty well, and it's always good to get top level opposition like this," said Donovan.

Belfast bantamweight Ryan Lindberg had a seven points lead over Hongliang Zhang at the end of their contest , but young Cavan BC flyweight Ceire Smith was on the losing end of a 13-7 decision against Yujie Luo.

In the evening’s other bouts , Belfast's Conrad Cummings won his middleweight contest 13-7 win against Jainting Zhang but Ireland’s Stephen Ward’s fight ended with his disqualification in round three of his bout against Maimaiti Zaifula.

The Chinese, Beijing Olympic Silver medallist, Zhilei Zhang, recorded an outstanding 24-2 points win over Cathal McMonagle to bring the evening’s performance to a close.

Overall then, an excellent week for Ireland’s amateur boxers and good to see large crowds in New Ross and Dungarvan as well as at the National Stadium. Ireland deservedly coming out on top on aggregate 22 – 12. The Chinese were gracious in defeat and I feel sure that the Irish team, particularly the newcomers benefited greatly from the experiences over the past 7 days.

Sorry can't help you much on that one. He was due to - but did not - compete in the 2010 China Open Boxing championships. When I was at the WBC Night of Champions in Cardiff last Summer, the Chinese coach told me then that he was "taking it easy" in 2010/2011 but planned to return in good time for London 2012 .... but I have heard nothing of him since then. Perhaps someone else on this forum has... IF I hear anything new I will let you know but as you know reliable news from China is not easy to obtain at best of times...

    Hi Bren:

Well Ochigava did win the final but much less convincingly that I expected. So far I have not seen a detailed report of the fight (nor a recording but here is what Ingrid Egner said afterwards : (in her own words):

"Lost the final against Sofia Ochigava 2-0. But it was an even fight. 0-0 first round, 0-0 second round and then she got one point in each of the next rounds. After the first round all I had in my head was: I can beat her, its working. It was not impossible.
I lost but I'm happy that I managed to follow our tactic and I didnt lose focus.

Our tactic was to work in and out and use my speed to put pressure on her. I had to use my left the whole time so that she had to work and hopefully miss.

My problems often with right-handed fighters is that I forget to use my left, and usually I start attacking from the wrong distance. I do feel that I didnt do that mistake in this match but I should have put in more effort when I came in. At the same time you always have to consider how much chances to take in there because it is so important not to get hit yourself to."

So a return to winning form for Ochigava 2-0. Much too early to say she is back to her brilliant best but it is early days yet....

    Thanks Mike

So, Sofya didn't have it that easy. Goes to show, the talent
is there, the depth is there.

I remember many thinking that womens boxing wouldn't
cut it becuase there would not be enough willing to take it up.

It will never be as competitive as the mens, naturally, but
right now it has real potential, and come London, new names will arrive.

I still believe that Taylor on form will beat this girl.
I have seen Sofya in her fight with Taylor and in other fights.
Katie is all around the better fighter.

So just interested to know if anyone got the tickets they applied for. I applied for 1000 pounds worth of tickets but have been allocated only one ticket at 95 pounds, will hear this week which ticket it is. The whole thing has been so dissappointing for fans trying to see their chosen sports.

Folks got my Katie Taylor Gold medal tickets and according to the Olympic website there are some tickets left for the boxing and in particular for Katie's Gold medal bout.

The tickets are for sale to those who applied via the lottery and didn't get any any tickets what so ever and your dates are here, those of us who were lucky enough to get a ticket apply later also here.

There are tickets available in a lot of the divisions both male and female and more importantly there are tickets available for Katies Gold medal fight. So get your applications in for the remaining tickets.

Applied for 9 sessions and got 2, considering what I've heard from others I think I can actually count myself very lucky with that.

I got 2 tickets for the round of 32 for the Men's Light-Flyweights and Light-Welterweights, and I also got 2 tickets for the Quarter-Finals of the Men's Light-Flyweight, Light-Welterweight and Light-Heavyweight. All cheapest seats there is though, so I'll probably be a mile back from the action. Happy to have tickets though.
