Has COD ruined other games?

I went back playing some games I haven't played in a while and the on the FPS I played (L4D, Half life, TF2, Killzone, UT3 etc) The controls just felt, well shit. I can remember when I got the orange box it was pretty much the only game I played for about a year. But after playing COD for so long the controls just felt unresponsive and turning the character took ages (have it to 10 in COD)

Bought BC2 and killzone 3 and thought the same. Feels like I'm trying to turn a bus moving the player. But with COD the movement just feels really fluid, natural and responsive.

So what do you think? Has COD ruined other game? In terms of controller I mean:cool:

Well to be honest, given all that you said there I only see it as a kick up the arse for all other developers to catch up. Competition makes you better :)

wait... are you playing L4D/HL/TF2/UT3 on the pc ? If so then no... cod isnt even close to those 4 in terms of gameplay.. theres no weight behind either of those games on PC. For the xbox, its no secret that valve didnt give a **** about the console version of orange box but i've not played any of those games on a console so i cant really comment on how it plays.

Comparing CoD to say TF2/CSS/QuakeLive in terms of responsiveness is probably the total oposite to what you've said with the only CoD games coming close being CoD2 + 4.

I dont like how BC2 + KZ3 feel tho, at least not in the beta.

In that case i wouldn't really know. It has to be said that all of those games are primarly PC games tho, porting to consoles was more an after thought which may have resulted in less than great controls. although UT has K/M support for ps3 right ? Haven't tried it but would be sweet if they had more of this on PS3.

What about Halo ? How are the conrols for it ? Other than Halo/KZ and BF there isnt much else to compare it to really, since most other FPS games focus on single player.

ALSO.... the aim assist is pretty huge in cod compared to some of the other games. Try turning it off, it becomes a hell of a lot less responsive ;)

Halo Reach is a 'solid' standard console fps. Personally I think that that game has really set the standard for consoles for what they should try to achieve. CoD has the whole default Vs tactical layout where you have to choose between an awkward knife or an awkward prone, which is something should be addressed. As for responsiveness, CoD is on par with Halo.

Jet Black, up the sensitivity on those games.

I think cods movement and response time is to do with it running at 60FPS whereas BC2 Killzone etc all run at 30FPS. Not a problem for pc gamers as they can run games at much higher frame rates.

The main problem with cod is that it creates a vacuum in the video games market in November and no smaller more original games get a chance cause all the money is taken out of the market. Thats how it is ruining other games cause publishers stupidly schedule their games to come out at the same time and are surprised when they sell badly. This november is gona be mad with uncharted, MW3 and Skyrim coming out at the same time.

Well traditionally Oct/Nov is the best time to sell as it is coming up to Christmas. You sell to the fans on release week full price, and then to the gift buyers the next two weeks at full price. If you release it earlier, people are less willing to pay that €50 in December.

    Good point about the #fps

I recently went back to KZ2 thinking I might buy KZ3. Never really liked KZ2 but found it much worse than I remembered. Think the control/response of your character in the COD series is spot on.

Meant to say still have a soft spot for the Resistance games and played that online a lot before getting into COD.

MW2 despite all the various problems is a really fluid running game...BLOPs isn't a patch on it (NPI)

Think the OP was limiting it to the character movement in the game but yeah CoD/Madden/Fifa and all the other yearly sequels are slowly strangling originality in games. If they updated fifa 11's player roster with the up to date players/jerseys/teams then there is no need for fifa 12. The same for Madden. CoD's ideas are also looking thin.

The main difficulty I found was changing between halo and cod as the throw grenade/reload buttons were reversed often leading to betrayals in halo and untimely reloads in CoD.

For me the best feeling game with regards to player movement was the original halo: combat evolved and then gears of war. Everything in H:CE just felt right, fast, intuitive, fluid and backed up by some super vehicle controls.

In GoW, the flanking roadie run to chainsaw some hapless fool crouched behind a wall was great fun even though the game went from moments of supreme movement to farce in seconds. Trying to pick up a gun a tumbling into a laser fence/ or being sucked into cover at a wall you want to sprint pass or jumping over the wrong side of a wall when trying to get into cover. It certainly wasn't fluid all the time but it felt far more realistic, probably helped by the 3rd person perspective. That said some parts on vehicles/creatures were awful to control.

COd has the best console FPS control system by far, it just....works. I got the KZ3 demo and its stupid you cant use R3 to crouch like in COD, all fps games should just use that system. L2 to crouch my hole, thats for flinging grenades! (or aiming on the xbox)

I would actually prefer to have L2 as crouch and R2 for jumping, would be twice as good as tac layout imo. You could jump/crouch at the same time while aiming(Properly... tac layout restricts your aiming quite a bit imo) and shooting.... would probably cut down on nade spawn aswel :)

And jump ? while aiming and shooting and then going straight into prone while still aiming and shooting with zero reduction to your aim ? dont think so :)

IMO you could move a hell of alot better and more fluent if you could use R2 + L2 to duck and jump. Nades would be a slight annoyance but sure nades are for pussys :)

There is diffo room for improvement on console controllers thats for sure.

but then everyone would just be jumpshotting and dropshotting all over the place, I dont mind people doing it but if everyone was doing it itd be horrible, you'd have everyone reducing their body size by half and jumping around the map, itd be like trying to shoot Sonic the hedgehog :pac:

Not really, the PC's controls are a few steps above what that would be and i dont think its a problem there. Even still.. level playing field and all that, tac vs standard isnt.

With that setup and a **** ton of aim assist, they might actually be able to take quake to consoles :D
