Right I want to pay VRT on a car I bought in England. First time car, and I have never done any of this paperwork before, so help would be nice!!

Firstly I hear you sometimes need to present your license? I just re-applied at atm I only have the receipt, will that be ok?

Secondly the car is currently in my brothers name, and he's based in the UK, is that ok, will it still work?

Finally, I obviously need insurance before VRT, and I have that sorted, but do I need an NCT before or after VRT and when do I actually tax the car?

You don't need NCT and you tax the car after paying the VRT, you should have a form with the car, UK log book can't remember what it's called. You bring that into the office with a bank draft or a cheque, not cash. Been about a year since I VRT'ed a car so I'm trying to jog my memory. Anyway they'll give you a receipt with a PIN number so you can tax the car online.

you will also need your pps number

You will need your PPS no and photo ID and a Utility bill in your name
    The procedure now is
You have to Contact the NCT to get an appointment for paying your VRT
You bring the car for a pre VRT check to make sure paperwork is all in order, and that Chassis and engine no's match.
They will then give you a price for Vrt,which is payable to them
They issue you with your new Reg.
I'm not sure, but i think all imported cars now need an NCT test (the other Vrt check is not an actual NCT test).Whether you need to Nct the car before taxing it I'm not sure.

you wont need the pretest inspection if you have a valid MoT cert....you will need the normal NCT requirementsa after re-regging of course. It doesnt matter whose name car is in provided you have the V5C

There's a lot more info on the NCT website and the Revenue website.

If the is car over 4years old you need either a current MOT or else you must get a NCT test done after registration.
Younger cars don't need a MOT or NCT.

Most important document you need is the full V5 (logbook), doesn't matter who's name it's in, without this you will have no end of hassle and will either end up unable to VRT it or else have to VRT at the highest emissions rate. Don't under any circumstances have the seller of the car re register it in your name as this will cause weeks of delay, they simply tear the export section from the V5 and give you the rest so that they can have the car removed from the UK fleet and no fines or penalties arise from it.

You also need some class of a receipt, can be basically wrote on a post it note, anything, just to verify date of sale and from who it was purchased, price is not important as this has no bearing on VRT.

PPS Number and a driving license or passport for ID purposes.

Once it's 4 years older it will need an NCT regardless of whether it was issued an MOT the night before it was brought in to the country. UK MOT test has no standing in this country as the tests are different.

Don't know why they ask for it but they do and they won't register your vehicle without it, i've been through it twice.Check out note 4 of this link

Don't know why they ask for it

It's to stop people importing lots of cars and not paying tax on the profits, this way they can keep tabs on how many cars an individual imports and audit them accordingly if they suspect it's commercial importing.

Bit of a surprise, got the VRT appointment for today.

All the documentation is in order, but they cannot give me a VRT quote as its a recent BMW, and the revenue "will ring me" with a quote at some point in the future.

Is this new, how long will I have to wait?

It's seems to be a new thing.
I was getting a 17 seater Minibus Vrt'd and I had to wait on them to ring me,although they got back to me the next day.
The thing was that I knew it was €50 being a Commercial and the person that I was dealing with at the Nct centre agreed that it should be €50 but she had to wait and confirm it the next day.
It just meant I had to make a 60 Mile round trip two days in a row.:(

Revenue can check with the manufacturer to see if there were any non standard equipment fitted from the factory. They will do this via the cars VIN or chassis number. VRT is also charged on any factory fitted extras such as leather seats, sat nav, etc. This used to be common only on high end makes but these days they are doing it alot more often on lesser brands too.

I went through the same thing this week, I imported a 2009 520d Msport, the online calculation was 4800, after sending the VIN to BMW the revenue came back 3 days later with a figure of 5300 (not bad considering all the extras!!)
    Hope this helps...

So they got back to me alright, 12:10 today.

The amount was a little higher than the ROS site but not much so big deal.

BUT! they close early (i.e. 12) on Fridays so I will have to go back to them on Monday morning.
