Hate my college course

Well i'm in my second year of college and hate my course. I thought I enjoyed it, but I think I just enjoy the social aspect more. I don't go to lectures anymore because I have no interest in them. I know ya cant enjoy every lecture you attend but I don't have the slightest interest.

My friends and parents think I'm mad dropping out considering the way things are going with the country.

I really have a passion for health and fitness and would love to do a course in that. But my parents want me to finish it just so I have something to fall back on. I find one of the modules really difficult as well and I cant stand another minute of it.

I can't change to a health and fitness course because my LC points aren't high enough. It would mean I'd have to find another way around it. But that doesn't bother me.

I'm not sure whether to stick it out or to do something I have a passion for.
Anyone ever have to make a decision like this. Please help! I feel like I'm stuck in a dead end.

I dropped out of my second year of college. I was lucky enough to have a supportive family who helped me out financially and whatnot.

Firstly, make a plan as to what you are gonna do if you were to drop out of your current course, ie. finances, specific courses etc... If it's feasible, then I don't see what you're waiting for?
If you have to go back and finish your current course you can always pick it up where you left off. There is no great loss there.

    Good luck.

This happened to me, and for financial reasons / my parants, I stuck it out.
I think now that I have graduated that I did make the right choice; my degree has stood to me even if it wasnt the most useful one in the world. I hated the majority of college aside form the social aspect (and even that wasnt great in my college) but I am proud of myself for sticking with it.

You can always go back to health&fitness and do it after your current course. If its a three year course, you are over halfway through it-if you drop out, you have essentially wasted a year and a half.

Have you looked into conversion courses? Check out www.postgrad.ie. I dont know if there is one that transfers over to health and fitness but there seems to be everything under the sun so Im sure they have something. Knowing that you have something in your interests to look forward to after you complete the current course might motivate you to do well/complete it.

Either way, think about your options long and hard before you do anything. Good luck.

    It's a tough situation, OP.
It's true that having a degree will stand to you more than dropping out. How and ever, failing a course due to hating it and low attendance won't stand to you any more than dropping out.

Also, I think something a lot of people don't get is how hard it can be to stay in a course you hate. It's really unsatisfying, you end up attending less and less, your grades suffer and then you start getting anxious about your grades suffering but still can't care enough to change it!
At least, that's what I went through in my third year. Luckily, I knew my course was the right one for me so I was able to turn it around.

But if you're in the wrong course for you, and there's actually another course out there that you know would suit you better, I think staying in your course which you dislike could end up making you feel like crap. Consistently.

Absolutely, think your options through, and don't do anything too hastily here, but bear in mind that your own well-being and happiness comes first. Maybe there's a PLC that you could go through to get those points?

Oh, and finally, you should go see a) your college counsellor and b) your careers counsellor. They can both help a lot. You should know what all your options are, and they're there to help you with that.

Best of luck. :) And hang in there!
