Hi, I hope some one can help me out here.. I have a 1999 VW Passat, the horn doesn't work on it, the advice I'm getting on line is to check the fuse, (which I did and its ok) then check the horn relay.. I have located the relays, which are under the dash drivers side.. but can someone tell me which one it is... and what number it is.. I would really appricate any help here.. thanking you in advance...

Ok sounds like relay so.The airbag slip ring can go which would also stop the horn from working and is a way more espensive fix.,but if you can't hear the relay clicking i would guess the relay is stuffed.

Pop off the interior door skin, handles, locks, etc. Never looked at a Passat myself, but I've heard that in a lot of Mk3/4 Polos and Golfs there's a bracket holding the barrel in place on the inside that can rust away. I'd assume the Passat is the same. If the barrel is spinning freely that's probably what's gone wrong. Kits such as these apparently fix it, but you might want to confirm with someone who knows more about VW.

If the key is just swinging free from side to side with no resistance, but not actually going all the way around, check that there's a plastic piece joining the barrel to the bar going from the interior lock lever. On a Micra I have this plastic piece is gone on the driver's side, the barrel is working fine but just isn't connected to anything
