I would like to ask present and past owners of the Audi A4 tdi 130bhp just how reliable and cheap to run, fuel wise, are these cars.
I am considering buying a 2004 model with approx 90k miles and full service history.
Is there much of a difference between the 1.9tdi and the 2.5tdi quattro in terms of fuel consumption.

All opinions and comments greatly appreciated!! ;)

I currently dirve a 2.5 TDI quattro, never had a 130pd but had a 100pd years ago, there is a good bit of difference in consumption the V6 TDI averages around 35mpg where as the 130 would do high 40s early 50s.

The lose in economy is more than made up for in driving experience, after having a V6 petrol car i promised myself i'd not go back to the 4 pot diesel, the 2 extra cylinders really make for a more pleasurable driving experience (well as pleasurable as a diesel can be) i.e the power band ism't as narrow as lollypop stick and it doesn't run out of steam half way up thr clock.

As for your original question the 130 pd engine would porbalby be one of the most relaible variants of the 1.9 lump,if it has been well maintained and serviced with the correct oil then it should be good to go for some time yet, only major wear and tear issue is flywheel (hard to avoid ) if its going to go then its going to go.

The 6-speed gearbox can give some trouble around 100k miles in the 130bhp model however of the two it would still be my pick due to its lower running and servicing costs.

The t/belt change in the 2.5tdi is a pig of a job to do from what I know and you will be charged for the pleasure accordingly

Timing belt change in either is pretty much same due to them both having north to south mounted engines.

Its not the actual gearbox that gives trouble but the selector fork, not really a massive issue and not that widespread either.
