Scrappage trade in's - Where do they go?

Short question. I am curious to know, but can anyone tell me what happens to cars that get traded in for the scrappage scheme? Just asking because a mate of mine traded in a 2002 Toyota Corrolla that was certainly worth more than the scrappage price that he was offered for it. In this case, can they sell the car on, or will it actually get scrapped?

A 02 would not qualify for scrappage.

They cannot sell them on, they must be scrapped.

    Well, Renault gave him €1500.

they get scrapped, as the name suggests.

if you wish, you can buy them back from 'the government' for 2000 euro before they hit the crusher.

He said scrappage - I just thought he was mad, the Corrolla would have got at least €2k if he sold if privately, and he wouldn't have had to have bought a Renault with the money.

He might have gotten €2k for it - but how long would he have been waiting? Some people just want to be rid of their cars without having to deal with timewasters and stupid insulting offers ;)

This would be a Renault "scrappage" scheme, i.e. it's just a trade-in by another name.
So he just got a bad trade in on a car that Renault most likely will sell on again (at a profit).
State scrappage cars must be scrapped. But I hope a few good ones escape, this whole scrappage idea is lunacy anyway, it's just taking government money and giving it to the Germans, the French, The Japanese, Italians and a lot of it the Koreans.
All so we can take perfectly good cars and replace them bog standard, small engined, poverty specced, lowest end of the range cars that will hold their value like a sieve holds water and at the end you will have lost more money than you got from scrapping your perfectly good 10 year old car.
All so you can say "I got this year's reg, don't you know!"

all scrappage cars are scrapped, they have to be. it is quite sickening at times, we had a bmw 740 in last week, 84000 miles and not a scratch mark or dent, and its in a cube now. owner swopped it for an aygo. we had a subaru with 24000 miles, and one woman tried to trade in a yaris with 9000 miles on it but the garage took it as part exchange as it was worth more. 2 audi a6s merc e classes. but they all have to be scrapped, thems the rules:(

Some people know the price of everything - but the value of nothing.

i've been talking to both a main dealer and a scrap dealer and both have said if you fancy a scrappage scheme car you can buy the logbook back for the 2000 euro that they owe.

Well I suppose we could let more garages close then give the money to the salesmen at a rate of €188 a week instead.

If the cars being traded in are so great theres nothing stopping people buying them off the garages for the price of the allowance. It's all well and good moaning on the interent about smething you have no intention of doing anything about yourself. It all smacks of "someone should do something about that, just dont ask me"

And I thought the story of Johnos and his sister scrapping the Merc against a Hyundia was bad. That is just heartbreaking its the saddest thing I have ever seen on the internet. Time to get out the bottle of brandy..:(:(
