To increase or decrease for each set

    Hey ya'll,

So I've just started going to the gym with the aim of gaining mass and I'm loving it, albeit a bit too much but I have just one question regarding sets.

Should I be lifting the heaviest weight for the first set and then decrease the weight for the next set and decrease it again for the next or vice versa?

There are different views on which way is more effective so I've been confused. At the moment, I'm doing 4 sets with the first set using weights to which I can just about achieve 10 reps and then for the second set I'd be using weights that I can reach 7-8 reps, increasing the weight for each set.

I'm of the opinion it's not possible to hit maximum working set weight - straight out of the gate.

    I would therefore pyramid up.

    10 x 60,80,100,120 for example.

I like where possible to make the same jumps every set.

BTW the last part of your post did not make sense to me - are you doing 4 x 10 with the same weight or is it just 1 x 10?

He is doing a set of 10, then 8, then 6 then 5 or something similar.
At least how I read it.

For most of my excercises, I warm-up by working up to my work weight.
    Say a set each of 20kg x 8 (bar), 40kg x 5, 60kg x 4, 70kg x 3, 80kg x 2 then 5 sets of 5 reps at work weight.

But, after that for say DB sets I'll go straight into work weight. Mostly because I'm warmed up from barbell work, and also because it can be awkward to change weight between sets with DBs
