Armed with a D90 and 35mm 1.8 I made my first attempt at a few gig shots.
Cast of Cheers, in Whelans last Friday....great band :)

Some notes (feel free to skip and cut straight to the photos):
    - All shot at f1.8 in Aperture mode, ISO ranged from 1600-2500.
    - Band was pretty engergetic, which made it difficult to get some shots
    - Lighting wasn't great, for example I found it impossible to get a decent sharp shot of the drummer who was in the back and cast in red light.
    - I quickly ran through lightroom and found that upping the blacks and tweaking the white balance reduced most of the noise (I don't really know enough about noise reduction to do it properly yet.
    - As they are quite dark I found that you might need a decent monitor to see the details (e.g. the dust from the overhead light in #10)

For your 1st gig they're pretty good and referring to your points...

Some notes (feel free to skip and cut straight to the photos):
    - All shot at f1.8 in Aperture mode, ISO ranged from 1600-2500.

1.8 shows in some of the shots as the faces are out of focus comapred to mics and hands.

    - Band was pretty engergetic, which made it difficult to get some shots

Compared to the bands I shoot these would be stationary!

    - Lighting wasn't great, for example I found it impossible to get a decent sharp shot of the drummer who was in the back and cast in red light.

Few times I was in Whelans lights were not bad, but been about 18 months since my last time there.

    - I quickly ran through lightroom and found that upping the blacks and tweaking the white balance reduced most of the noise (I don't really know enough about noise reduction to do it properly yet.

Lightroom 2 and 3 and especially 3 does virtually all the noise reduction you will need.

    - As they are quite dark I found that you might need a decent monitor to see the details (e.g. the dust from the overhead light in #10)

aahhh we all love a bit of dust.

The more gigs the quicker you will progress and you def have the knack for it.
Check my Pixie account I've stacks and stacks of gig shots up.

    Thanks AR, much appreciated.

I'd imagine I'd have to up the ISO to 3200 if I was to get a larger DOF or am I limited by the focal length/distance?

Nice job. A few of them could probably do with a bump of fill light, but great all around. I did my first gig-proper other night too, same issues as yourself. Got some noise and dust and flare and all the rest, but it's rock'n'roll! There should be lots of noise! :D

great stuff, tough lighting, I like a few of them, no.5 in particular. maybe give channel mixer a bash in ps, and see bout recovering some skin tones on the band, great work, especially for first gig
