    Doesn't matter.
    6-12k
    70 miles / week.
    No.

I meant in general. I was going to have a look online for one but heard was put off them a bit by people's comments.

Yes - if you can get one cheap.

It's a bit of a nothing car. Isn't bad, but doesn't really do anything that well either.

Are you that fickle that a bunch of anonymous numpties can put you off buying a car?

If you like it buy it, if you don't then don't.

Now if you want advice on if its a good deal and things to be spotted in ads or to be wary of then yes, this is the place

When I said "people's comments" I meant people I know. I was going to look for the car online. I like the car but before I go test drive one I wanted to get advice from people who might have driven one before or who know a lot about cars.

    So I came here....

At 70 miles a week I wouldn't bother paying the premium for a diesel. Just make sure the gearbox in the 1.6 petrol is sound.

    I love the herd mentality,
Golfs are the best car ever made, interior is so solid blah blah

Stick a boot on it and it suddenly becomes dull. Even the interior becomes boring, despite being the same.

Gear box in our 06 Jetta @ 120 k is gone.. 600 Euro labor and 300 Euros for parts quoted by local VW garage.. its a robbery.. any ideas how to follow up with VW.. I mean gear box gone on an automatic .. @ 120 K.. car is regularly serviced.. I mean come on.. how bad are German cars in reality!

A well specced Jetta is a very nice car in my opinion.

A colleague picked up a low mileage minter with a full cream leather interior for peanuts before Christmas. It's very nice

The 122bhp 1.4 TSi is the preferred choice if buying one of these. The Jetta boot is actually bigger than the Passat.

But sticking a boot on it DOES make it more middle-of-the-road/middle-aged, staid...duller...IMO.

The current Jetta can look OK in the right spec. It's not a car I wouldn't be seen dead in - for the right money/spec, s/h - but I would be going out buying a new/nearly new one...

I think this only came in around end of 2007.

I'm picking up a 07 Jetta on Sunday. Can't wait to crawl into the boot.

If you want a saloon car that is in that size/category, I'd say it is a very good choice.

The other choices are the Focus saloon, corolla saloon, Octavia, etc.

The Jetta compares very favourably to each of these.

It is not a competitor for a Passat/Mondeo size car though.

It doesn't sell well because a new Passat is pretty close to it in price. A 1.9 TDI comfortline would be the pick of the range I'd say, for that budget.

I have a 2006 Jetta 1.9TDI since someone put a jeep into the side of my Passat last year. It's economical (53-56mpg on motorways), practical, handles OK but bores the crap out of me every time I sit in it.
