Just doing some research on 2007 and upwards Honda Accord 2.2CDTi and a have a few questions.

My research tells me of knows issues with the earlier models (2004-2005), mainly cracked manifold and possible injector problems. Just wondering if anyone out there knows of any issues with the later models??

Also would it be better (i.e. cheaper with no loss on quality) to purchase a UK import as oppose to purchasing an original registered Irish car??

What time of MPG are these diesel cars doing, I see on some sites 50 MPG, is that really achievable???

    Thanks

I wouldn't worry about the issues you've found on the older ones, they rarely enough give trouble, and certainly no more often than any other modern diesel out there. I'd go for it, any other marque will be equal or greater risk than the Honda. The MPG is good out of them, I would say 50 is achievable, def high 40's anyway.

Going to bump this as I was thinking of buying a diesel accord. Its an 04.

Are the diesel accords as reliable to high mileage as the petrols? The one im looking at has 135000 miles.

I spoke to a few people with the early (2004-2006) Honda Accord Diesels and they all had a cracked manifold problem (costing circa a grand to sort) but once sorted had no further manifold problems. This also echoes what I read on the web.

One guy had an injector replaced but again once replaced had no further issues and he now has 180,000 miles on a 2004.

Looks like the later diesel engines has these issues sorted out (or so my research tells me).

Honda's 2.2 diesel engine is uber sensitive to the proper grade of engine oil, which is 0w-30 ACEA C2.
If the previous owner was trying to save a few bucks on the oil (or had knowledge of this),then there's a 99% chance that the new owner will run into timing chain issues.
Judging from my experiences behind a Honda parts counter 50%of the 2.2 diesel owners or mechanics fall into the above category :(

If there's no proper proof that the correct oil was used or the slightest of rattle can be heard from the chain: walk away!

I would buy a petrol Accord over a diesel one any day,but that's just me (and my experiences) ;)

The exhaust manifold is replaced for free by Honda.

They are a superb car. Really good and don't feel much like a diesel to drive.

Regarding mpg. I would suggest (having had two of them) that 40 mpg is more realistic- I never got anywhere near 50.

In my own case, I travel an 80 mile/day round trip and get 51mpg. However, I do have one or 2 annoyances alright..........I find the foot rest and clutch are a bit too close together and I find it rolls a bit more than I'd like. Apart from that though I've never had any mechanical issues.

    i average around 50mpg aswell...mainly motorway driving....

I'm not upto speed on the current UK prices, i bought mine in the UK back in 2008, saved about 6-7K on it...i'm sure that'd be less now...

Manifold warranty extension on the prefacelift is upto 7 years, or 125K, after that it's out of your pocket....manifold is upgraded on the facelift model, so no worries there...

One big consideration is a pre 2008 diesel accord will cost you €840 a year in tax...large chuck of change every year....from 2008 on the tax is 300ish...

Great car thought...i luvs it :D

Accord diesel is in tax band C or €302 per year from 2008 onwards, still very low though compared to the pre Co2 rate.

Having problem with exhaust fumes and dip in power on a 2005 accord diesel. Not main dealer serviced but does anyone know if honda will cover the repair if a cracked manifold???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,715 ✭✭✭Gryzor

Extended warranty on the manifold is under 7 years or 125k, you're ok on years, how's the milage??

They covered it for me, I had to ring Honda Ireland directly, the dealer was giving me crap...

Thanks fo reply. over the mileage and not main dealer serviced but I will contact them. It has had the problem for some time I just got used to it -also seems to come and go a bit-only when I give someone a list they comment on it.Surely when they know it is a common problem they were obliged to contact owners. cheers

    Not main dealer serviced ?

Nice one, that is good service...

A question did Honda look for the service history or were they not bothered??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭johnjoe1966

Honda did not require sevice history for the manifold repair. But I see that they covered repairs on the injectors and timing belt in the uk under an extended warranty and I'm trying to see if this is the same for Ireland.

I bought a 2nd hand 2008 diesel honda accord last June. Its an Irish registered model with very low mileage only about 40000 on the clock.
About 6 weeks ago the VSA(vehicle stability assist) light came on the dash and i started to google it as i didnt know what it was for.I also contacted my friend who previously worked with my local honda dealer as a mechanic and he told me the part alone is €1200 so i started to panic but found out on a honda forum that honda had extended the warranty on this part to 6 yrs and within 63500 miles.I was covered under warranty thank god and i had no issues with the dealer who replaced the part for me.
Honda are very good company and i think they have good customer services and will look after you alright.

Any advice on who to contact or how to go about this? I've an 05 that I imported last Sept and the fumes are getting worse!
Was in Honda in Swords today but the guy behind the desk was fairly non committal about the warranty. . . Wondering if I should try a few other dealers or contact Honda directly. I'm pretty gutted as this is the nicest car I've ever owned :(

I contact Honda Ireland direct and they had me bring in the car to a main dealer and once they confirmed it was the cracked manifold it was done under the extended warranty. I suggest you contact honda direct
