00 Ford Focus 1.4 Chugging

    Hi

Have a ford focus 1.4, and it chuggs in the lower revs. If you are driving and go into second, or third and the revs are below 1500 the engine chugs like she's going to cut out, but doesn't

I've checked it on Autoboss and can't find any fault codes thrown up.

Anyone know any reason why this is happening?

Water ingress onto the plugs/leads is a very common cause of a misfire on those engines.

Have you an engine fault light on the dash?

These engines are very susceptible to poor spark plugs. Replace them if they're bad and use genuine ones.
Whenever you change oil on these use genuine filter and 5w30.

Check the vacuum hoses for air leaks (PCV under manifold), and check the air filter and the small sponge underneath it for debris.

No fault lights on the dash at all no.
As I said it's only when you're giving her the shoe to move on at a junction when the revs are low. Will check the plugs and leads

Are these yokes not known for ignition coils failing frequently enough too. Doesn't always bring on the management light either.

I had a few of these problems. Would recommed changing coil pack and leads and making sure the correct plugs are fitted.
Coil pack and leads are about €120 plus vat, plugs are about €8 each and it normally takes only half an hour.

    :)

Don't hold me to this, but if you find that the coilpack and leads are suspect, go to a breakers and get the coil and leads from an earlier mondeo, say 97-98 type. The coilpacks in these cars are more reliable and should be interchangeable.
You will also need to get the four mounting bolts from the mondeo as they differ in length.

Try a set of plugs first though..

I find myself in the exact same position as the OP. I was googling something completely different and this thread popped up.

Ive a question does your focus also take longer when turning over the ignition and the engine chug a little on startup?

These symptoms appeared on my car literally 15 minutes after filling the tank in a dodgy looking petrol station in the middle of nowhere. This would have nothing to do with it?

Is this a problem that can cause greater damage or am i able to let it go for a bit... Im quite poor atm. OP let me know how this turns out for you.

In case you've already noticed Im quite cartarded. I appreciate the info gents

I thought the OP might like to know... You cant really let it go. Car broke down this morning. Started it this morning had serious trouble starting got a few meters the engine warning light flashed and i shut it down. Its not turning over now on ignition and chugs severly. In the garage now
