Advice on a broken car.

    Hello all,

I apologise for the fairly basic title of this thread but I am looking for abit of advice.
I currently own a 99 VW Bora 1.6 Petrol, with low mileage for the age at 89000m. I was in the process of trading in the Bora against a newer used car, but low and behold, the Bora decides to blow its gearbox and possibly the clutch too, only two days before I was due to trade it in against the used car.

On a first preliminary inspection its looks as if repairing the car could cost up to 800 euro, (more than I was getting for trading it in).

The question I have is what to actually do with the car:
Should I just scrap it and pay the full price for the new car?
Or, should I repair the car and try and sell it off, (a quick look on used car websites shows some Boras going for around 2000 euro, very similar to mine.)

Alternatively, I am sure there are probably people on these forums who have friends or associates that can fix it for relatively nothing, if this was the case I would be willing to let her go for a bit of money, potential to have a very good and clean Bora (when fixed of course) for almost nothing.

Of course I am keen to also take into consideration costs of moving the car, or any other penalties associated with it, e.g. scrappage etc..

I thank anyone who has any advice on this,
    Thank you.

well you need to get it properly diagnosed first.

you cant know what steps to take next if you dont know exactly where you stand now. it may be worth paying a garage an hour or two of labour fees just to know exactly whats wrong.

then armed with that info, i'd go back to the garage you'd already done the trade in deal with and see can you still come to an agreement on taking the bora, obviously costing you 'x' amount more.

you could be waiting months to sell it privately in its current or even repaired condition.

If the gearbox is actually after failing and they were offering you less than €800 trade in for it just scrap the Bora, then ask them for the straight sale cash price on the car you were trading it in against. What car is that?

12 year old Boras are not fetching €2k despite what some dreamers ask for them on the internet.

Thats what I would do. I'd some how say they will be happier not to take it

After that put it on Donedeal as a spares or repairs ad for €500
