Creatine or Protein?? Which???? :S

    Hi, Im looking to find which would suit me best?

    I'm 5ft 10in and of average build.

    I currently train 3 times a week, once on strenght and conditioning and the other two times mainly on cardio.. Im looking to get bigger in general, like shoulders arms chest legs etc..
    I have a cheap all in one shake which i take but it doesnt seem to be making much difference.

    Im wondering if anyone can recommend either going on protein (like whey protein) or creatine or both?
    I have time and dedication to train as well as my 3 set training sessions. (I play GAA).

    Any advice would be much appreciated! :)

    Take both sure, they are nutritional supplements not drugs so you wont be 'on' them any more than you are 'on' milk or water.


    Speaking of milk and water though, drink lots.

    The scientific evidence shows creatine has an effect on bulking but no effect on performance or recovery.
    Protein supplements do seem to aid recovery though and would be a better option.
    Overall though a balanced diet with attention to specific needs is the best stategy to improve overall fitness.

    I never really found any benefit with creatine and it gave me a pain in the stomach. Whey is great for when you don't have time to eat.

    Read the stickies, especially the one by Will Heffernan on pre/post workout nutrition.

    But generally, eat more to gain weight. If you are eating enough you don't need anything else, if you're struggling to eat enough protein over the day then add in the odd weigh shake.

    What evidence?

    The studies that have shown creatine increases the rate of restoration of muscle glycogen?

    Or the ones where the replenishment of ATP-CP stores leads to faster recovery from short duration burst of high intensity exercise?

    In this study whey shakes worked just as well as shakes containing glucose and whey. If you want to lose fat, then whey shakes actually work better, but shakes containing creatine, glucose and whey work best of all. It's a shame that Cribb didn't look at shakes without glucose, but just whey and creatine. These would probably be even better for body composition.

    That's quite interesting, esp the graphs. Also notice that people on both protein and protien/glucose/creatine increased lean and total mass, and also lost body fat over the 10 weeks.

    Agree re pro-cho-cre verses pro-cre shakes
