You cannot do the test if your car does not have a valid NCT.

You could try and get another car for the test, or try and get a cancellation NCT test.

    Hi OP,

As people have stated before me... you have to have a valid Tax, NCT and Insurance disc displayed on the vehicle that you plan to use on the day of the test.

You have a couple of options though!!

Option 1. You can hire a driving school car to do the test if you want to go ahead with your original test date.
Costs usually between €80 - €130 depending on the driving school.
This normally also includes a lesson just before the test.

Option 2. You could also defer your test to a later date as long as you give them a minimum of 10 days notice before your actual test date.
Note that this can only be done twice, so if you have already deferred the test 2 times before now, then you will have to proceed with this test or the test will be cancelled and you will forfeit your booking fee. You would then need to reapply.

However as your test date is the 10th March, you might just sneak in but you would want to contact the RSA asap to let them know.

If they AGREE to defer the test, you could do it at a later stage in your own vehicle once it has a valid NCT.

    Hope this helps!!!

My experience last weekend might be useful for you:

Had driving test booked for yesterday Feb 28th.
On Friday I realised that the NCT of car Im using (OH's car) expired that day - Feb 25 :(
OH didnt have NCT test booked till April!

Saturday 9.00 am: Went to NCT Centre and asked would there be any chance of getting a NCT test . The guy there was very nice and said if I came back Sunday morning at 8.00am they might fit me in.

Saturday Afternoon: Had the Car looked at and replaced one tyre.

Sunday 8.00am: They let car in for NCT test. Failed !
Problem with Light Alignment. The guy said I'd need a full NCT retest booked :(
Afterwards I spoke to the guy in the NCT centre and explained the situation, he said if i got the lights fixed and went in Monday morning they might fit in the retest.

Monday: 9.00 waited outside local Mechanics, he fixed the lights and I drove over to NCT Centre where I asked for a retest (even though wasnt booked)
They retested it and it was fine!

    Monday 12.45 Passed Driving Test!

So if I can do it in one weekend (with faulty lights) Im sure youll be able to get NCT in time.Just be very nice to the NCT people!
