Debate - a part of monastic training

I remember watching a documentary about the Dalai Lama, and one of the things that was highlighted was the fact that debate was an important part of monastic training. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what kind of things would be debated?

I don't have any detailed knowledge of this area. I think it is quite involved to understand the purpose and way it is used.
I think it is used as a tool to help students to develop a clearer understanding of the texts they are studying. It is used as a formal part of study during education.
I might look into it a bit more if I have time.
