I got 4 new tyres at The Garage in Dunboyne at the weekend. I did quite a bit of research and they were the cheapest for me.

Talking about tyres on the motors forum is one of my pet hates! €80 - 120 is meaningless unless you get a tyre make and model! €80 could be a rip off and €120 a great deal. Tyres are important, I'd recommend getting a known brand. Doesn't have to be top of the range PS3s but a recognized brand is a must.

Good value in Falken, Kuhmo etc if you don't want to go the Goodyear, Michelin route...

These guys are all fine and well and I see them being mentioned on here time and time again but bear in mind you will still need to get the tyres fitted after. As wrong as it may seem I have read of people being verbally abused by tyre fitters when they go along to get their tyres fitted as they're not buying the tyres from that fitter. Others struggle to find fitters who will fit them for less than €25 a corner, so at this rate of going I'd seriously wonder if you will make any serious saving overall, partcularly a size as common as 205/55 R16. And of course your stress level and mental health may well take a knock along the way for reasons afore mentioned...

What we need here is a sticky/list of recommended suppliers and the major brands they stock and fit - I'd not have the time or patience to try and find someone to fit my "bargain" internet tyres.

I'm looking for 4x 215/55/R16 middle-of-the-road (eg: Verdestein) tyres for a 06 Passat but I dont want to pay €160 a corner either!

    Dublin/Meath/Cavan areas.. any suggestions? :)

Best to have a fitter lined up before you buy the tyres. My fitter lets his customers have the tyres delivered to his garage too, I saved a grand total of €140 on my last set

You didn't get new continentals in a 205/55/16 for €48 each. I presume that when you say they are in perfect condition, they are actually second hand?

@OP. The answer to this question depends entirely on what your idea of a good deal is. Are you looking for the cheapest tyres you can get or are you looking for someone to supply a certain brand/model of tyre at the best price.

I'm guessing you bought large sized (possibly for a 4x4 vehicle) and/or premium brand tyres or you were quite lucky in that you found a co-operative fitter, who fitted the tyres relatively cheaply?.... or a combination thereoff?

Yeh they're second hand but you would never know by looking at them, no thread wear on them at all. Paid 100euro nov09 for new tyre. great saving.

Had a choice of 25,30 or 48euro depending on how much thread I wanted. They said people generally go for the lower if they are getting rid of the car in the near future.

If you buy them from eiretyres they give you a list of tyre fitters at the end where you can have the tyres delivered and fitted, including the price they charge and reviews from customers, that you can choose from.
Kind of makes your point moot.

Does it though. Did you test this in reality as in price 4 tyres of eiretyres, plus fitting costs plus factor in any driving you need to do to the fitter....there are no fitters listed when I do a search of within 20km of my local town and only two within 25km (one which shows EUR Call for the price). This versus making 8 or 10 phonecalls to fitters in your area to find the same or very comparable tyres. I'd be surprised that if after this I'd make any worthwhile saving on 4 mid range 205/55 R16 tyres to be quite honest.

Also thinking back and it did dawn on me when you mentioned it I did see a post on a thread here before about somebody who carried their tyres bought of eiretyres to one of the fitters on their list only to still be subjected to the verbal abuse all the same. It was a wee while back I read it but will try my best to link to the thread in due course all the same.

My local garage has bridgestone Turanza 300's (205/55/16) for 95 euro a corner which is the same as online (inc fitting), bridgestone are putting up their prices by 8% in the next week or so and again after that.. Might be time to get some spares in.

Hi, just a few quick points. When buying secondhand some stock is 4 maybe 5 years old and its secondhand for a good reson.90% of the very good secondhand we come accross patched up. Also most special offer deals that guys buy on line are also very old stock, not something you can check before buying, I see this regular. Buy local and you have some comeback.......I work in a garage and for example Hankook €100ea....€325 for 4 (€83.75ea), Perilli €110ea...€375 for 4 (€93.75ea), Kingstar €90ea...€300 for 4, Event €80ea.....€290 for 4 (72.5ea). Supply fit balance all included and you can go back at a later date if there is a problem,

every tyre manufactured has its birth date stamped into it, Hankook i got in today was made the 51st week of 2010, this makes it 12weeks old. You would be suprised how many people check this.

Camskill and Eiretyres are great if you know of somewhere to have them fitted, i can recommend someone outside Clonmel, if theres anyone around the south east/ South tipp buying tyres online, he charges 7 euro's a corner balanced,

Few cars at home now and including the outside family we've saved hundreds buying online and getting them fitted here,

Usual trye of choice is Toyo Proxes, or Turanza's Camskill have 2 day delivery.

I did more than test it, I followed through on it.

I bought 2 tyres, had them delivered to a local mechanic who fits tyres and he fitted them both for €20 saving myself a tidy sum of €43. Cost of driving was negligible as the garage was a mile down the road and tbh is moot again as you'd have to drive to any fitters that you were buying the tyres from.

What's more, he said that he loved the site has he got a lot of business from it.

I guess overall you were quite lucky OSI in that you got a co-operative fitter nearby and lets face it, to get 2 tyres fitted for €20 you did very very well as the majority of fitters would be charging you more than that. Perhaps the travelling to the fitter is a moot point if as in your case you would be travelling to a nearby fitter anyway if changing your tyres but hardly a moot point if one needed to travel up to and over 25 km. You seem to be lucky in that you got a pretty sound bloke to fit em but have read of others who haven't being so blessed when getting tyres fitted in this manner.

My over-riding point to you is that you can be lucky and save yourself a few quid when dealing with the likes of EireTyres or Camskill and no doubt you will a fair share of the time but don't automatically assume such is always going to be the case either.

Not 4x4 tyres. 15 inch in a common size so cheap enough, I was quoted €360 supplied and fitted for a set of Toyo Proxes T1-R's. Delivered to the door from Camskill the four cost €170 and they were fitted and balanced for €50

As above, and tyres which are over 6 years old are now a fail advisory in the NCT.
