I cannot believe the attitude of some people.
Today i decided to go to the count centre in donegal town for the first time ever in my life just to see what happens. As i have always had an interest in politics.
I travelled there and did'nt know u needed a pass to enter. But i was soon to find out i went to walk in first i was met by a man shouting pass pass pass which i had no idea what he was talking about because everybody else was walking in un interupted then to be pushed by him and grabbed by the arm by the other guy and told no pass no entry when i asked where do i get one i was guided through the door again with a firm grip on my arm.
At least these guys could have some manners and not push or grab anyone and at least answer a simple question. At the end of the day who the hell do they think they are.

    .

I'm not surprised about this in the slightest. The people involved in the count thing they own the political process.

OP, yes, you need passes, but I'm sorry you were treated this way as you seemed to have good intentions and were just uninitiated. Some people are just power-tripping A-holes. :)

Some people are just pig ignorant. Might have had a problem with people trying to force their way in or something though perhaps?

ok fair enough you had good intentions and didn't know any better...

but if I tried to just walk in the gates of Croke Park on All Ireland final or a big concert day with no tickets would you expect the stewards to accept this straight of or would you have a problem with them grabbing you and pulling you away...

In fairness, for those events people have paid money so obviously you'd know you can't just waltz in. But I could easily see how an uninitiated person would think this was open to the public.

Strictly speaking, if the guys who grabbed you were not members of the Gardai, then does this not constitute common assault? as I have read of instances where store security man handle a shoplifter only to be successfully sued for assault.

Yes! You should sue these men. You should go find a solicitor. Pay the solicitor and a barrister a big load of money. Let it take over your life for the next few years until you eventually end up in court when who knows what will happen.

    Yes! Do that op!

They sound v rude. As you said they could have just explained the situation to you.

The pass is often a sticker that is readily visible, although you may not have noticed it.

Thats just what I was thinking. If i was roughed up by some ruddy faced hillbilly i would make a complaint to the Guards.

Can anyone get a pass or is there a golden circle for access to the heart of our democracy?

At the start of the day, they are reserved for nominees of the candidates, so they can tally the results. However, as some counts are finished, they may allow the general public in.

So that little boy that I saw kicking a football around a count centre in Kildare was really a tallyman

Ah sure those politicians bring their kids everywhere.

Remember that FF fella with his daughter up at the top table at the news conference/press call.

Strictly speaking, common assault was abolished 13 years ago. The o/p was trespassing. He is lucky that he was only turned out of the count centre.

At the Dublin South Count Centre yesterday evening, Alex White and his crew tried to waltz into the centre for their victory walk without handing over their passes. A good few of them got manhandled for not giving it over and pushing past and a verbal fight ensued.
