I cycle to work and I'm wondering is it better for me to eat my breakfast first thing in the morning before I head off or in work after my bit of exercise

Something with complex slow release carbohydrates.
    IMO porridge is the best.

The ideal is an hour before hand.

For competition/racing it advised to have a meal 4 hours before and then a smaller one an hour before.

Training on an empty stomach is a technique used by trained/elite athletes to simulate conditions at the tail end of a race as well.

You can burn/use approx 60g of carbohydrate an hour incidentally.
