Had this idea a while back, never did anything about it (1 part laziness to 9 parts busy as ****)

Basically along similar lines of share your creativity thread, this will be for the community to ask for help on projects or whatever.
I see it working as simply as:

User 1: who's good at fixing this computer dealy
User 2 (who is probably baconzombie :p) : Me!

    or

User 1 <galva, grames etc>:I need people to come to my gig for support
User 2,3,4: We have time to go to this!

    or

User 1: I hate my avatar, can anyone shoop something?
User 2: Here's an awesome avatar!

So yes, behold a place to Ask for help/Pimp your shiz.

The only rule is I will break your legs/face if it's abused- I'm talking to you "I've just signed up/Never used the forum but I'm gonna spam you anyway Cúnts".
So yes, let the NocTwitteryCommunityHelpness Beginnnnnn!!!!

(I'll be back later to probably abuse this and ban myself >_>)

I can help people with, like, brain stuff. Outside of that, I specialise in generic run of the mill-type problems.

Think of me as a b!tchy agony aunt. Like Mrs Mills, only younger and poorer.

ok well the only thing i seem to be good at is testing. i'm real good at pointing out what's wrong, so if anyone has software that needs testing, i'm yer woman.

I think I may be the first one to use this thread for its purpose:)

I would like to get a mini-laptop ro notebook, something very small literally just for internet use. I have a blog for reviewing films and I've been thinking about ways to make it better, so I'd like to be able to update it on Fridays, while in the cinema reviewing new films on their release date. Has anyone got any tips on where to look?

Also, does anyone know if Meteor's broadband to go is any good?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

Meteor's BB is ok once you're in a city. Outside of dense population centres, they're hopeless. Try find a friend with a Meteor account living near you and ask them what it's like. For the record, I'm in the city (Dublin 8) and it's usually quite solid.

As for the Netbook, how big are your hands and fingers? :) It's difficult using one of the smaller keyboards (even the 92% ones) for extended if you have stumpy fingers like me. Asus, Acer, Samsung and MSI make solid netbooks (I have a very early edition Acer Aspire One), but for a few sheckles more, you can go from 11" to 15" in terms of screen which is a welcome upgrade.

I'd base the decision on budget more than anything. The more you can throw at it the better off you'll be, but you wouldn't want to be spending much more than €400 for your needs as described here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,762 ✭✭✭✭stupidusername

hmmm. I stayed away from netbooks when I needed a new puter last year, besides the space I'd need for programs I use, I thought ick the smallness of it would be impossible. but now I've to use one at work and I kinda don't mind it. it is awful in terms of the screen size though. but you've glasses so I dunno maybe that'd be no problem for you. but the size of the keyboard isn't so much of an issue.well of course depending on your preference.

Well I have my laptop for my main work so there would be no programs that I can think of going on the netbook. As far as the keyboard goes, anything will be better than my itouch:pac: I have used one before, a friend lent it to me for working on my script for my course last year, I find them pretty easy to use. I'm just no good with the tech stuff so would have no idea where to start in terms of specs. I've seen two that look good both price and size wise but I wouldn't want to rush into a purchase and buy something that completely won't work for me.

When I was looking for this lark I ended up with an MSI Wind. I'm sure things have changed since then, but my bad boy was my only computer while living in Germany and it did the trick. I'm sure many of their competitors have caught up as that was two years ago. Some of them are way too overpriced. Get it cheap and cheerful and only use it for doing the grunt work, keep your files on a usb or sd card. Avoid programmes you don't want etc. and you'll get away without any of the bells and whistles of the more expensive types.

From what I've heard, Vodafone are the champs when it comes to mobile broadband, but that's just from reading around various forums on this place.

Are you planning to type while in the cinema? Prepare to get punched in the back of the head... think how annoying the light from a phone is :P

The real thing for you to do is get yourself put on the list for press screenings, that'll give you a few days edge :)

 No in the bar after screenings! I'm offended that you would think I would commit such an atrocity. As Shepherd Book once said there's a special place in hell for people who do such a thing in the cinema.

Heh an MSI Wind was one of the netbooks I was looking at, Komplett only have one in stock at a good price.

Do you have to be a vodafone customer to get their broadband?

How would one go about getting on a press screening list? I doubt anyone would consider a blogger press:pac:

Well, I've had my lil guy for years and it's never let me down. I still use it for downloading software etc, just incase there be booby traps ahead.

I think you can just pay for their broadband. Get a lil stick.

As for the press screening, I did communicate by other means :)

Stay away from Komplett, they are not like they used to be, seriously, go check out the complaints in the consumer issues forum.

I hate when they don't standardize their descriptions and spec listings. I like that the MSI Wind has a card reader. SDHC cards are super cheap storage and super portable. Plus I know the MSI keyboard is pretty useable.

Yeah I used to love Komplett, they were great, built my first cobbled together from components pc from them and Overclockers UK.

Built my last pc from these guys and they are popular enough with the modders on here.

The do look good, but they don't seem to have an MSI in stock and knowing that Few's has lasted him I'd be inclined towards that particular make. I haven't ever had issues with Komplett but to be honest everyone has issues with a supplier at some stage or another. Also Komplett's price is pretty good.

A cheeky trick... see if Aldi or Lidl are selling any notebooks. They used to sell re-branded MSI Winds.

Many many people have complained recently that their stuff is just not getting delivered. They order, they get charged, it doesn't get shipped, they complain, they receive no communication from Komplett and when they try and contact them they don't get any answers.

That is strange. They have a phone number for contacting them which is one of the things that popped up over on consumer issues:confused:

Shops are a lot more competitive these days. Plus re-branded MSI Wind in Lidl/Aldi is super good quality for money. But the likes of Harvey Normans etc are all about the haggling now and are usually pretty close to online prices. Plus warranty good times.

The 1st model has the newer Dual Core CPU in it.
That basically mean it has two units to do most of the work so it is faster and able to run most at the same time.

The 2nd is a few gen's old so I'd stay a way from it.
Best way to get is under CPU / Processor is will list "Intel Atom xxx" you want to stay with the 500 or higher.

Hardwareverdand is good and cheap but you have to pay cash { bank transfer } up front and wait a long time to get stuff off them

    Edit:

The CPU / Processors { / Brain }in the above link is the old 1st generation chip.

I'll be getting a similar spec laptop/netbook for my dad in the next few days so if you can wait I post up the best options.

    What is you budget?
Which is more important Is weight or battery life ?
Does it have to be a set colour { or what colours can't it be ; you sometime get a bargain/pay more due to case colour } ?
Will you want to watch HD quality videos?
Is no or external CD/DVD player an issue { do you review DVD? }?

Well I spent €450 on my laptop so no more than that. If I could stick to around €300 that'd be great.
    Battery Life.
    Nope.
Nope, I don't do DVD reviews and if that changes I can do them from home pretty easily.

I've bought from Elara before and found them quite good. My current laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad) I got from Expansys. I bought an Asus Eeepc netbook for my Mum a few years ago and that's still going steady. It was quite cheap but does the job. :)

The Eee PC yokeys used to be the best, in fact they were the first wave of notebooks. Still pretty cool, but maybe others have improved on the thinking behind them. Think they favoured a Linux rather than windows OS, though now you've options.

May I interject with a completely different "help needed" topic? :o

I need to do something about my fear of public speaking. I have absolutely no problems addressing a crowd of strangers as long as it's in an informal setting, and most people who know me would never think I'd be lacking in confidence in that respect! But when it comes to giving presentation on my work or anything of the kind, I just find it very hard to deal with. It's too formal, too prescriptive, and my main concern is coming across as unprepared or unprofessional. It gets to the stage where I almost, but not quite, have panic attacks.

I realise that as a psychology-type person I should have the knowledge to get over this stuff! But if anyone could recommend any courses or techniques or, hell, even Rescue Remedy to help me get over this, I'd be extremely grateful.

Sorry for the long rant; I've just given a presentation in my department there and I'm still shaking a bit. I thought it best to ask for help now while the panicky feelings are still ripe and I know it's needed.
