Steering Issues

Hi everybody. Long time reader, first time poster.

Just wondering if anyone could help me find out what needs fixing in my car. It's an Opel Corsa '04 1.0 litre petrol, 110,000miles on the clock.

Went to drive it this morning only to find out that the steering wheel won't turn to full lock either left or right, it locks up about half way round. It turns a bit more turning right than left. Was driving it the night before and didn't notice anything different to normal; no excessive noise, no clunking. My steering before this had a bit of play, about half an inch either direction. I'm thinking my steering rack is gone. Couldn't get an appointment till next Wednesday so doing a bit of research till then.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers,
    John

Did you check the level of the steering fluid??

Thanks for the reply Corkie. Pretty sure its an electric power steering rack so no fluid involved.

Hopefully that's the case. Forgive my ignorance (learning more and more about cars as bits go wrong) but if the motor was the bit that's gone, should I not still be able to turn the steering to full lock, albeit with a lot more effort??

Interesting stuff, sounds like it could be whats wrong alright. Hopefully its as simple as a bit of grease into the coupling and reposition a sensor. Thanks for the link Corkie.
