Keeping lost property

Kind of a trivial problem I know but would appreciate some suggestions.

When I was about 6 or 7 years old I was in the UK on holidays with my family. I found a gold ring on the street and ended up keeping it. Can't remember why we didn't hand it in anywhere but we didn't. I brought it home with me and then quickly forgot about it.

Fast forward 20+ years and this week while going through some stuff I found the ring. And tbh I now feel terrible about keeping it. Basically it was stealing. It belonged to someone and probably meant a lot to them. I can't even remember the name of the town we were in where I found it so there's no chance of me finding the owner. 20 years later chances would be pretty slim anyway.

So I don't want to keep the ring anymore but I don't know what to do with it! Any suggestions??

If there are no markings on it such as an engraving with initials and date, then there is absolutely no way of tracking the previous owner.

If you need to salve your conscience, then donate it to some charity.
