Hotel booking advice

Just wanted to get some advice from season travellers as to whats the best tactic when booking a hotel.
If I were planning on heading to London and was looking for a hotel do you think that it would be possible to get a really good deal on a room by booking a night or 2 before you go? Or is it just better to avail of the best available at the moment?
For example, if I were planning on heading to London tomorrow (Saturday) would it be worth my while calling the hotel to get a better deal than what is available on hotels.com for instance? Or do they generally tell you to F. off?

In my experience the best deals are available on the hotels' official website, and in advance. I always check TripAdvisor and other sites for reviews, but then google up the hotel website (usually no link is provided) and book on it.
There are websites for last minute deals, but I never used any of them.
